The Big Ten has a policy that makes it difficult for athletes to transfer within the conference, mostly to limit the mayhem that might result, so that part of Ryan's ban is not surprising. Similarly, Marquette is located in the state of Wisconsin and competes with Ryan's Badgers for players and prestige, so that ban is not hard to fathom.

It's not clear, however, why Ryan has banned Iowa State and all the ACC schools from contacting Uthoff. "I have no idea," he said.

The ban now includes 25 different colleges with 12 schools in the ACC, 11 in the Big Ten, Iowa State and Marquette on the restricted list. Apparently, Wisconsin could place every Division I school on that list. "Theoretically they could," said Uthoff.

Looks like another great rule the NCAA has put in place to help out the "student athlete". And how small does Ryan look doing this?

Maybe not allowing the schools to initiate contact is fine; he can always contact the schools that he's interested in. But to not allow a scholarship to play at any of the schools on the restricted list is stupid.

Someone please explain to me why every time a coach interferes with a player's ability to search for a new schoo, this board reacts like the coach is the first coach to ever do such a horrible thing.

I can't speak for this case, but I can understand, and approve, of a coach doing it if there has been some prior contact between the player and a "representative" of that university. I can also understand it if the player has been a "problem child" or if the coach just wants to keep him away from a rival.

No. The NCAA rules are absurd. I just get tired about people blaming coaches for not being ready to unilaterally put themselves at a disadvantage vis a vis other coaches. How many of us really refrain from doing things that everyone else does in our job if it gives those who are competing with us a leg up?

Has Coach Calhoun ever put any restrictions on transfers ? I do not remember hearing of any. Same with Geno ? Edsall when he was here ?

I don't think a coach should be allowed arbitrarily deny a player from receiving offers from particular schools. There should be a policy, perhaps established by the school, that is applied in all such cases. Above and beyond conference rules perhaps the school won't allow transfers to instate rivals and schools within a certain radius. I get that Ryan is probably pissed at the kid but to leave him subject to being denied at the whim of the coach is just wrong. There has to be a level of consistency and fairness, IMO.

Did anyone watch/listen to the interview that he had with ESPN MIKE & MIKE this morning? they repeatedly kept asking him if he is okay with the athlete transferring why are you not just letting him go where he wants, and making him go threw a appeal with the school. He kept beating around the bush and kept bringing up BS about him being on the coaches board or something. He just never gave a definite answer. To me it sounds like a bunch of sour grapes and he is mad that the player is leaving his program and hes trying to screw him over.To me a college coach should have no right to tell the athlete where he/she can transfer to. Things didn't work out there for the athlete for whatever reason but the coach should understand and let him proceed with life.

Just to play devil's advocate, what if the player's AAU people, or parents, or whatever, are talking to another school before the kid comes and talks to the coach about it? Is it wrong for the coach to block the kid from going to a school that was dealing a little underhandedly towards him? I still think it is, but interesting to think about.

I could live with a conference rule about no transfers within the conference... but that's as far as I'd go. If schools can drop a kid any year, then those schools should have no claim for the next year. It should go both ways.

If that situation exists and the coach knows about it, then he should definitely block the player from going to the school that is "tampering". That is an absolute no brainer to me.
