There is REALLY only one TRUE BLUE BLOOD team now and forever. For 30 years and the coming 5 years of GENO's coaching career has any team come close to the consistency of UCONN's winning 30 plus games for 30 years and all of UCONN's recors that it has made over that 30 years that almost ALL will never be broken./ THAT IS WHAT A TRUE BLUE BLOOD LOOKS LIKE. I rest my case. GO HUSKIES!!!!

Yeah one blueblood. The only program that has ever won championships under two different head coaches - Louisiana Tech.

According to your simplistic made-up definition which doesn’t pass an obvious laugh test (below).

NCAAT-WBB has only been around for 42 years and counting. Geno and CD has been around for 40 of them and has won 11 national championships. (La Tech won in 1982 and 1988).

On the subject of Top WBB programs:
  • We did an analysis here and here, which you would remember;
  • Another logical riff from the concept of “Blue Blood” is lineage. As in WNBA lineage … and UConn tops that list as well.
 
it's a decent roundup. really hard to know until schools do it under multiple coaches, though. LSU is there (as much as I can't stand lady bling), and ND is knocking on the door.

For better or worse, the big question will be what Uconn does when Geno hangs em up.
 
The criterion of having to win a championship under at least two different coaches, in order to be viewed as a "blue blood" program, is arguably an important one.

However, the article linked at the top of this thread does not cite this as a criterion. Instead, they list the following Blue Blood requirements:
  • A program must have won championships in multiple decades;
  • A program must have appeared in 5 or more championship games; and
  • A program must have gone to the Final Four 10+ times.
According to the article, only 4 programs meet the criteria. Another 3 programs are close to meeting the criteria but aren't quite there yet. And 2 programs get a "special mention" for their past accomplishments, but have not been strong in recent years. (In the interest of not copying articles to preserve their copyrights, that's all I'll say.)

So, using the criteria as set out by the article, what do you all think?

Yes, I agree. I should have used blue because I was joking around with @Next 12 who asserted that UConn is the “ only” blue blood. I surprised how many people agreed with me.

In truth, there are several blue bloods. LaTech is the only dynasty. Succession is the key element of “dynasty.”
 
For the record, the definition of “blue blood” is a person of noble birth. There is no particular guarantee of merit, competence, expertise or success.

So perhaps a better term to describe UConn, TN and any other team that made it to the top of WBB through hard work and perseverance might be “self-made women.” ;)

All of UCONN's records cannot be ignored. No team comes remotely close to that. I again rest my case.

I think the Post's criteria are fairly solid. I'd likely bump SC to the ranks intead of hedging like they did.

I'm a reassonable guy, so I will give you that there are some blue blood teams out there . I concede that because you said UCONN was the best ever. WE finally agree. I correcy myself to you. I really enjoy your posts.

The trouble is LTech hasn’t been in the discussion for several years now. Some degree of continuity seems to make sense to me. UConn can’t meet a definition of more than one coach because there has only been one coach for 40 years, but I think there is no bluer blood than UConn -along with Tennessee - as the program that popularized the modern game for TV. And UConn’s continued success and influence is pretty much why, even if the younger players don’t know it, so many athletic females now play hoops. In that sense UConn is the bluest of blue. Obviously the early prominence of schools like LTech and ODU plus maybe west coast USC, and the emergence of Tennessee laid the foundation. At bottom, it makes no difference, fun to shoot the breeze about.
 
Dynastic Blueblood:: LA tech (ancient though it is)

Blue bloods: UConn, Tennessee, Stanford, Notre Dame, Baylor, SCar ( minimum 2 NCs and a decade of excellence)

Tier 3: all the other former champs who aren’t blue bloods.U$C No decade of dominance.

In modern times, a dynasty can be a sports group which has a prolonged run of successful seasons. Both UConn and UCLA women's and men's basketball programs respectively are/were definitely dynasties.

So if UConn won another title with Chris Daly as a coach...that is essentially what happened at Tech. Sonja Hogg was HC, had Leon Barmore as an assistant from 1977-1982 and named co-coach in 1982 when they won, Leon took over solely in 1985 so I quibble with the "two different coaches" aspect.

Barmore won another with his own players 1988.

Well, I'm not quibbling with you here, it's just that it's such a fun word to say over and over.
I do agree with the concept that limiting the discussion to NCAA women's basketball recognition is unfair and incorrect. The formation of the NCAA's women's hierarchy is simply an artificial date. Basketball was played before then, and with the way the NIL is going, might well be played after the NCAA is relevant. Ancient history is still history.

Interesting because they don't list Uconn under the men's teams but they are as dominant as any team over the last two decades.

I’d say Tennessee and UCONN are the clear top 2, both in terms of titles, title game appearances and Final Four appearances, not to mention longevity and consistent success.

Below them I’d put Notre Dame and Stanford, both of whom have had consistently strong runs for 25-30 years and a couple of titles.

Then there are a lot of “next tier” programs including:
-Baylor who effectively had a great 15-16 year stretch under Kim but has dropped off

-South Carolina who is in the midst of a great stretch but it has only lasted a decade so far. If Dawn racks up a couple of more titles I think they solidify their place in the grouping above.

-LSU who had a solid 6-7 year run in the 2000s and has transformed back into a national power under Kim

-LaTech who was dominant in the 80s and 90s


Other notables:
-Maryland has been excellent for about 20 years and won a title

-Louisville had a great stretch from 2009-2023, level of success appears to be tailing off though

-Duke was an elite program in the late 90s/2000s and remained relevant through most of the 2010s

-Georgia had a great 20ish year run under Andy Landers

-Marsha Sharp had a strong 15 year run at Texas Tech and won a title

-Iowa has had strong streaks throughout their history under multiple coaches
