9,000 against a vastly inferior opponent doesn’t seem low to me.Someone who went to the game posted that there were a lot of empty seats, so I had the same thought when I saw the attendance list.
I believe that attendance figures reported are tickets sold, not fannies in seats. Even though, I'm surprised the actual attendance was so low.
What the actual attendance was is a bit of a mystery. Big East Buckets compiled the list Nan reposted. They report 10,299 in attendence with 100% capacity. The game was at the XL Center with a capacity of 16,264.. You report that there were about 6,000 empty seats. If we assume there were 10,299 folks that were in seats and 6,000 empty seats, that adds up to The XL's capacity. So far, so good. Since it was reported 100% capacity then all those 6,000 empty must have been sold, which seems doubtful but who knows.9,000 against a vastly inferior opponent doesn’t seem low to me.
The figures were for the men’s games. 10,000 plus is capacity at Gampel, where the men had their opener. The Marquette women could only dream about attracting 16,000 fans. What the actual attendance was is a bit of a mystery. Big East Buckets compiled the list Nan reposted. Then there is this: The capacity of Gamble, per Wiki is....10,299. Sound familiar? The only thing I can conclude is that some slacker at Big East Buckets wanted to give the attendence for the UConn game, had no idea what it was, assumed the game was at Gamble and being Uconn that it would be a full house and so checked Gample's capacity on the Internet and plugged that number in. I'm open to less harsh scenarios as to how that 10,299 number showed up.
To your point that 9,000 to 10,000 or so is a great crowd, that's so true and the envy of most women's BB teams. It's just that I always assume UConn has enough followers to sell out games and when they don't am disappointed and worry the fan base is deserting. Unrealistic for sure.
There were not 9,000 people there. I would put the number closer to 6,000. Maybe a little less. The lower bowl which is mostly season ticket holders, was only 3/4 full.9,000 against a vastly inferior opponent doesn’t seem low to me.

That game was in Milwaukee, btw.Marquette beats #23 Illinois 71-67
What an interesting, close game. Duffy gets a lot out that squad. Very impressive. Karlen is the only player even approaching size at 6'2". She's another Minnesota native, knew Paige in HS. Another one is on Illinois, Adalia McKenzie. She was one of those kids who just had magic in her hands in those days. Everything she threw up at the rim seemed to go in. But she's not quite tall enough at 5'10" or quick enough to bring all that magic to D1. Still, she's put together a couple of decent years.Marquette beats #23 Illinois 71-67
Also reported on the radio. There is no way the XL was 60% full. The lower bowl alone was 60% - 70% full. So, what should I believe, the reported number or my own lying eyes?9000 was the number reported in the box score.
Duffy's teams are worth watching due to her coaching ability. She always seems to know the right buttons to push on both offense and defense. Suspect at some point she will move on to a Top 10 program. What an interesting, close game. Duffy gets a lot out that squad. Very impressive. Karlen is the only player even approaching size at 6'2".
