Big East teams turn down NIT

Declining the NIT is petulant and short sighted. The teams should play more basketball. No one knows what next year holds.
At the end of this long, stressful, demanding, restricting, isolating season I 100000% support declining an NIT bid. Let the kids breathe, they’re not basketball robots

Watch "Last Chance U" on Netflix. After 4 seasons of football teams, this season is a Juco hoops squad from East LA. It's a good watch for any hoops fan.
Not to turn this into a "Last Chance U" thread, but the problem is that this head coach and his assistants are all decent guys who care about the kids and actually know how to coach. Now if the show was about a HC who is a self-centered, petty jerk who thinks coaching is about yelling, and who knows as much about X's and O's as any casual fan does, you might have something there.

These kids have the rest of their lives to not play basketball. At some point, they are all going to take their uniform off for the last time, and when they do, do you think they will have wished they played more hoops or less hoops when they had the chance?

This year is no ones last year of college basketball if they choose to not make it.

Not a fan of uplifting stories, eh?

Its not like the NCAA hasn't been trying to kill the NIT in forever. Everyone knows the NIT is going through a slow painful death anyway.

Add COVID into the mix and it makes no sense to go through the headache and risk of playing it. Keep your kids at home, train them, prepare them for next year and keep em away from any potential harm. Plus, no MSG but Texas? Really? Who the heck wants to go down to Texas to play ball? The same state that lifted all COVID restrictions. Nahhhhh

Thank you for this.

Actually, that's not always true...lot's of kids are happy to move on even though they enjoyed playing...We forget that at this level it's a job. With Covid, it's a job that doesn't let you visit your friends/family.

Not sure whether those are the matchups above but Dayton v. Memphis seems like good one.
It's actually a pretty good field. Low key any of those first round games could be decent games.

I also like the matchups, no mediocre P5s play against each other until the semifinals. The quarterfinals on the 25th could be a nice day of basketball in between the 2nd round and the S16.

Memphis should make their preseason goal being a high seeded NIT team every year so they can assure themselves they will reach their goals

Belmont led the nation in wins and they don't even get into the NIT field????????????????
That is plain BS
I don't care who they play they won 26 games
People were complaining they didn't get a NCAA bid but no NIT??
What a screwed up process and year
I thought first place teams got autobids to the NIT?

I hope you realize the NIT is run by the NCAA. Not in their interest to kill it.

Yes I know that. But the moment they made the NCAA Tournament mandatory and then bought the NIT was the moment they forever turned it into a second-class tournament of rejects and they give it such low attention and promo that it makes it obvious that they really don't care.

Not trying to be snarky here @kobe, just haven’t payed much attention to Cinci this year. I’m surprised they didn’t make the field. How are things trending for you guys?

The Big East Teams not in the NCAAs could hold a mini-BE tournament Round 2, round robin type of gig if they all want to play some more basketball. No need to travel to Texas for a tournament no one watches. The seniors who are graduating could get some good games in to make up for the ones they missed. Invite some A-10 programs. It's the year of Covid. Mix it up a bit.

If the NIT winner got an automatic bid to following year NCAA tourney it would add some juice to the tourney. Some players will have moved on but at least it would offer some reward to the school. It's lost all relevance as it is now.

We were in that crowd. A great memory.

announcer asks Phil Gamble in postgame interview at 1:45: 'there are 100s of seniors across the country that would love to be in that seat ur in right now, how does it feel to be the only person?'

as mentioned previously, that game was my starting point, right under the basket next to the O state band. pops took a chance at the box office aboot 20 minutes before tip, and landed 2 seats just released or turned in minutes before. he said to the ticket person 'look at that kid-it's his dream to get in and see the game.' floor seats, behind the rim (ohio section), and i could hear every word on the court. unbelievable luck. fuhghettaboutit. we were now bigtime.
yeah, im touchy aboot teams turning down an NIT bid.

There's a ton of arrogance in this thread suggesting that only the NCAA tournament is valid enough to be played during a pandemic. That's shortsighted, and as a fan of Connecticut basketball, ignorant as it gets.

So yes. Arrogant. Shortsighted and ignorant. Ouch.

Let them play.
