Big East Scheduling

I don't expect everyone to be as annoyed as I am, or get a response. But I need to vent a tiny bit.

I can't believe that in addition to the Marquette game the Big East has schedule both the men and the woman on the exact same day at almost the exact same time. Why!? If you couldn't guess I'm a huge fan of both squads.

Yes, I know I can record one game while I watch the other, but it's not the same. It's also hard to stay away from spoilers before I get to watch whatever game I've recorded.

I totally agree. Not only this Sun, but on the 8th, the games are an hour apart.

For me, the 11th is also a problem. Both teams visit Georgetown on the same date at different venues. I live in the DC area, so can't attend both the men's and women's games, which I did last year. So I decided to see the women.

The scheduling this year is ridiculous. The men have maybe one more weekend game at Gampel before the end of the season. That's crazy. There's also too many neutral court games now. Do more on campus games.

I share your frustration. We recorded the men’s game on Wednesday to watch after the women’s game, but my son’s friend texted him before we got to the end of the first quarter so the ending was spoiled and we knew about Liam’s injury.

Keep in mind that UConn largely controls their own schedule, particularly when it comes to where & when. When you’re running an athletic program with million dollar deficits, you have to maximize tv and attendance revenue to earn every dollar you can.

So games are shifted to Hartford, the Mohegan Sun and so-called neutral sites. Start times are dictated by the tv networks to maximize viewership. Yes it sucks, particularly for students. But it’s all about revenue, and that’s not going to change so long as UConn wants to compete with the big boys and girls.

The scheduling does upset me. The UCONN men's and women's people should work together on this. Looking back over the past 35 years, or so, I always had the feeling that the people who administer both squads never seem to truly work together.

UConn doesn't do the scheduling for the Big East games. It's the league that created these scheduling conflicts. I hope Dave Benedict is letting the league know that fans aren't happy about it.

FS1, which usually carries the men’s games, had the Seton Hall-Villanova women’s game that evening. I don’t know about SNY but maybe they didn’t have the personnel to send to Wisconsin on New Year’s Day and had to buy a local feed and that was when the production was available

UConn, as well as all the other BE teams have input into schedules, particularly when it comes to home games. For UConn, that means whether games are played at Storrs or Hartford and what time they start. In addition, the tv networks who pay millions of dollars to the conferences also have a say.

As for the WBB game at Marquette and the MBB game at DePaul both starting at 2:00 Eastern/1:00 Central, let’s start with Marquette & DePaul, the two home teams. It’s New Year’s Day. You want to maximize home attendance and the network doesn’t want to run basketball telecasts late afternoon or early evening when the CFB playoff audience is at its peak.

Marquette & DePaul both agree to 1:00 pm local starts. Gives everyone who attends the games an opportunity to shake off a late night New Year’s celebration. While those start times overlap somewhat with the TX-Boise St playoff game, they steer clear of tOSU-OR in a midwestern market that loves Big Ten Football.

Once again, it’s all about money, and while UConn fan’s might be unhappy with the start time, UConn signed up to the tv contracts that generate millions of dollars for the University as a member of the BE.

The answer to your question is, as it is to ninty nine per cent of any question, money. If the network who purchased the contract for the games could make more money by televising them at 4 A.M. then that's when you would be watching them if you chose to be an early bird.

Usually the men and women do not play at the same time (while other BE teams do...or don't care if they do) so surprised it's happening on January 1, 5 and 8...three straight games! Fortunately, the only other "semi head-to-head" situation is January 29 when the women play at DePaul at 7 pm, while the men are home at 8 pm, also vs. DePaul.

Now you have both men and women at neutral sites in the tropics and in NYC. I don't mind an occasional NYC trip but as the late game of a night DH not so much.

When the games are on at the same time and you're a UConn at-large fan you siphon one for the other so in the end, the advertisers don't ever truly win in the end. I agree it's dumb but this is the result of having a strong men's and women's program. Other programs treat the women as lead-ins or back-ups.

You see men's UConn players begging fans to fill Gampel and the women just don't have those kinds of problems.

That’s correct. But the early game was going to be the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, which almost certainly would have included a top SEC school, and as I indicated, no tv network wanted to be televising basketball against the Rose Bowl or the Sugar Bowl, which unfortunately was postponed until the following day.

The Big East doesn’t care about Fox Sports’ profits. It already has its payout.

I just looked up the men’s game info and see it was on CBSSN. Obviously, CBS isn’t going to coordinate with SNY to be sure there’s no conflict.
