Gotta vent for a sec: am I the only one annoyed about how a basketball-centric league is currently failing at the main thing it’s supposed to do? Maybe it’s just a down year, maybe things will brighten up, but it makes no sense to me why our schools are struggling so much.

It’s been said time and time again that the lack of football is supposed to provide an advantage resources or priority-wise. When does it happen?

That said, let’s just beat Illinois and do our work.

Revenue sharing just started in July. They'll never have an advantage over the conferences getting a gazillion dollars from TV money but it should help. Shaka Smart needs to pull his head out of his butt and start getting major portal players. Nova will be on the upswing with Willard. Georgetown is on the upswing. I'm not worried about Creighton with McDermott or Huss. Providence will fire their coach and needs to nail their next hire, they have good money. Pitino has been very disappointing outside of conference. Need to give Richard Pitino some time but Xavier has been a good program for the past 40 years through 5 or 6 different coaches, not worried about them. Seton Hall, they have money despite claims they don't and Holloway can coach when he has the right players. Butler, meh. DePaul will continue to stink. UConn is the best program in the country.

I like your optimism and normally see the plus side of all the schools, but watching how some are blowing games we need them to win is becoming a red flag signifying yet another down year.
It's honestly starting to feel like we're Gonzaga.

In addition to the recent disappointing OOC results, we have to hope that whatever teams that earn a trip to march madness advance past the second round. Can't have a repeat like last year's embarrassment.
 
Yeah even if we never get into a P4 I’d still be happy if UConn becomes the chip winning version of Gonzaga in a mid majorish BE. Unless the AAC lets us rejoin as football only it would eventually have to be cut with no possible lifeline/conference/anything to play for, and that money can be reallocated to men’s and women’s bball.

Not ideal, but an option. This idea of going ACC on a hoops share equal/above BE while staying independent in football, fine by me too. Right now, it's all about preserving our primary asset. Anything with football is idealistic - even a promise to work into a conference longer term with proven success should be on the table. If Benedict has to get creative, so be it. Right now all our value is in hoops.

Yup - it drives the bus. We just don't have a lot to sell, TV sets, recruiting, etc. If we need to take a prove it deal, fine by me as long as it gets our hoops/olympics into a real conference. All we need is a share equal to/bigger than we are making now with some curve to grow. My concern with the BE is it's value goes backwards over time - that shouldn't happen with the P4 unless the SEC & B10 decide to do their own thing.

Why does "recruiting" matter when players are paid?

"football drives the bus" is so 2002 of you. Football programs are sinkholes of cash to be competitive. Unless a school has $50+ million to spend a year, every year, with that number probably increasing 5-10% per year, they are not winning the national championship in football. If you aren't winning the national championship, it is clear that a lot of schools are starting to wonder why try to compete at all. Going the BCU route is going to be attractive to a lot of programs. If you have $50 million a year to sponsor the UConn football program, I am sure they would welcome the call.

That’s a scary thought because if we’re stuck in the BE and the P4 starts investing more in basketball then we’ll lose any competitive advantage, that is, unless we reallocate all football funds to bball to compensate
