Big East March ‘26 Thread

Any idea of the seed order of Butler, Providence and Marquette if Providence losses to GTown tonight?

2. UConn 17-3
3. Villanova 15-5
4. Seton Hall 10-10
5. Creighton 9-11
6. DePaul 8-12
7. Marquette 7-13

Marquette spends on basketball Shaka has just been so stubborn. Bring Nigel James, Stevens, and Parham back and then hit the portal like crazy. Get a real frontcourt for once.
 
UConn should send Bobby Hurley out with the team on Thursday night for UConn's first BET game. Just to see the reaction. Then have Danny come out 5 minutes later.

Nigel James announced that he is coming back to Marquette next year.
 
I didn't realize Matthew Hodge tore his ACL, that really stinks. He's a good player, huge blow to a likable player and team.

Lower seed went 3 for 3 on Wednesday, fitting to only have bad loss opportunities across the board for Thursday

Meh. If UConn, St John’s, or Villanova loses today, that means they aren’t taking the tournament seriously and would have probably lost against Butler, Marquette, or DePaul anyway

The BE is the top 3. Then Seton Hall. Then everyone else. If anyone takes a bad loss today, that means they’re not mentally where they need to be at this point in the season

Marquette losing to that Xavier team only makes our last loss look worse. This Xavier team is hot garbage.

So is Marquette. They’ve lost to every good team they’ve played except UConn. I know there are some defensive stats out there that say they’ve been elite recently, but they’re really bad. That’s why it was the 7/10 matchup. Our loss looks really bad regardless if they beat Xavier or not
 
Losing to Marquette period could not look any worse because it made little sense as is.

As for other teams, Seton Hall has the simple task of beating Creighton. The bubble so far has been their best friend since making the finals would now give them a legit shot of a tourney bid.

It was previously reported that they were committed to the Crown tournament but they don't have enough available players.

Great guy, great coach. But it's time. Hopefully they can hire a quality candidate.

I feel better about DePaul moving forward with Holtman. I expect Xavier to be much better next year with Pitino in Year 2. Providence needs a really good hire, and I am hearing they have some money to spend. Marquette needs to hit the portal. Creighton is an interesting spot. Lot's of moving parts in the Big East...

I don’t think the Big East next year will be nearly as awful as this year, hopefully it’s as simple as some of these schools needing new life injected into them (coaching).

It's hard to be worse than this year, although I'm not fully sure how they'll get materially better as you need the players to do it. There isn't much coming in at the HS level, so it's going to be predicated by the portal.

I expect Xavier to be much better, as the rumor is they are increasing their NIL. Plus Pitino has a full offseason. I want to believe Marquette will be better as they have some nice young pieces, and I think Shaka is going to hit the portal this year.

Villanova has a nice young core and just added a top 50 recruit. Surprised Ruff didn't bring that up. I expect UConn to be good, and St. John's will reload.

Because they have two brand new coaches at two of the best Big East schools (Nova and Xavier) who didn't have a chance to build their teams up yet.

You answered your own question, they'll get better by bringing in better players.
 
Pitino brought up a great point with Rothstein, I think yesterday. The Big East needs to mandate a minimum that you will spend in NIL. He threw out 9 million. Not sure if its realistic with teams like Butler and Seton Hall. I know Xavier is going to commit more next year.

Having just hit my 50s he’s the oldest looking 58 I’ve seen in a while. Would have guessed late 60s at the youngest

Not sure that is even possible, since no school can spend NIL directly. I understand his point of building an NIL infrastructure and collectives, but it's not the schools themselves making payments. Solo making a national commercial is a pretty big example, UConn didn't do that. So there's no way to mandate this.

The limiting factor for some of these schools is whether their brand, and local reputation is sufficient that local companies and advertisers would see value in paying the kids for marketing work. Seton Hall? Ehh...not much really. PC should be decent, they are very popular in RI. Marquette is popular in Milwaukee. Xavier isn't all that high on the radar in Cinci, nor Butler in Indiana. Creighton should do well enough in Omaha, but it's a small school. I'd ask @superjohn whether DePaul athletes would be well enough known in Chicago. Once upon a time they were.
But most private colleges are at a huge disadvantage to any large public school in overall visibility.

You can revenue share directly, and Big East schools can spend up to 20 mil.
