Big East efficiency chart

From where I sit, and from having a sister who was in administration at a small Catholic college, the ability of these schools to provide the facilities and resources needed to compete at the upper echelons of NCAA D1 athletics is extremely limited or non-existent for most. This is probably the case for most private colleges and universities.

Exceptions are schools like Notre Dame who have a large and supportive alumni willing to pony up dollars for the athletic departments.

The legacy of the Big East schools and their major source of income are the men's teams, and I suspect they don't generate enough revenue to support the women's programs. The current model of Division 1 athletics is non-sustainable for most schools that are not in power conferences with big money (see football) broadcast rights. Big East schools can't compete on the football field where the big money is. They tried that in the 1980's and it did not work out well when conference realignment kicked in and they lost the "football" schools to poaching by the ACC (Florida State, Miami, Pitt, Boston College, Virginia Tech, and Louisville) and Big 12 (West Virginia). Oh, and Rutgers went to the B1G.

Then there is the whole philosophical debate about what the mission of a university is (or should be) that is a whole different can of worms and a separate discussion for another time.

The pool of schools that have quality programs for women ballers has widened out quite a bit. I suspect this has diluted the pool of candidates for schools other than UConn in the conference and we've seen a few hit the portal and head into play in other conferences. This topic got me thinking and then up popped a memory from the prepurgatory AA Conference that may have some pertinence.

So I was doing a rare thing, watching a conference game that did not involve UConn. I almost never did, but this day I did. I think it was St. John's and ??somebody. St. John's one and they had a flashy guard who set the court on fire. Flash was interviewed after the game and surprisingly the announcer asked her why she went to St. John's. What flash said, staring into the camera, nearly knocked me out of my recliner. She said it like she was staring at Geno. Here it is, close paraphrase: If I couldn't play for UConn I was going to make sure I'd play against them. I wondered then and I still wonder if there are more than a few who feel that way, wanting to play against and measure themselves against UConn. Does UConn's presence in the league help or hinder recruiting?

It's funny the way memories bubble up.
