For me, Aubrey Griffin is the Defensive Player of the Year in the Big East Conference, hands down. She has the ability to shut down the quickest and most effective offensive player on any opponent UCONN plays. Thus, this makes Aubrey an invaluable piece on this team and one that, I frankly are glad we have on this wonderful team.

Fair enough assessment, but I'll stick with the Velcro on the team, NIKA. NIKA sticks with the opposing player like they were Siamese twins. AUBREY is fantastic in her own way with her scoring and rebounding, but Nika was the defensive player of the BE last year and she will be the defensive player of the BE again this year. I know it will come that AUBREY did not play last year and that is fair also, but NIKA is the engine that runs UCONN's ship and I am so glad we have her. GO HUSKIES!!!

I'll take Aubrey, any day all day. She can defend all 5 positions on the floor. Nika while an excellent defender herself, is limited in who she can defend.
I agree with this, and I'll add that I think one reason Nika was DPOY last year was that she guarded the player bringing the ball up the court almost every single time a player was bringing the ball up. That extra five seconds or so off the shot clock was incredibly disruptive. She's just not doing that very often this year, and when they do put some pressure on, it's both Nika and Aubrey in the back court.

I think this is going to be a challenge for the BE Coaches to pick... not 1, but 2 outstanding candidates who play key roles in UCONN's defense. Perhaps a split vote... and a shared award??

She's playing a lot more minutes. I don't think they can use up her energy that way now. And certainly not with a roster of 7 or 8 players.

Yep, Nika's more important than she was last year. She probably got 1-2 fouls a game in those situations. UConn can't afford to have her on the bench in foul trouble nor drained of energy.

Some of that stuff is political.
What if Nika, AE, and Lou made 1st team BE. Then AG would be the perfect fit as DPOY. AE POY in the BE.

Aneesah Morrow is leading the Big East in steals and is 5th in the country in rebounds, 1st in the BE in Defensive rebounds, and 5th in the BE in blocks. Don’t assume UConn is going to sweep all the awards.

Morrow is possibly player of the year, or Segrist. I'd vote for Aubrey as DPOY. Got to admit though that Morrow is another level entirely in terms of the total package. Possible 1st draft pick before she's done.
As of now, I would say that Maddy Siegrist is the clear front-runner for BE POY. With all due respect to Aaliyah Edwards and her outstanding level of play, Siegrist is single-handily carrying Villanova. She leads the country in scoring, almost averages a double-double, shoots over 50% from the field, 40% from 3-pt land, 85% from the foul line, while taking 20 shots a game. She outplayed Morrow recently in a game where Morrow launched 34 shots.

Morrow is an incredible talent, and Edwards is having a phenomenal season, but UConn possesses more weapons, despite its injury list and continued bad luck. Villanova would be in the bottom half of the BE if not for Siegrist on their team.

Maybe when UConn plays Villanova, the DPOY and/or POY might become finalized, depending on the job Aubrey does in covering Siegrist.

When the BE coaches vote for DPOY, they do not know who made first team All-BE or second team. So there is no way to divide up the awards to try to make sure everyone gets one.

Excellent post, Surly1. At this point, Maddy is the obvious BE POY frontrunner. and actually should be considered up there for NPOY.

As for when 'Nova plays UConn, I'd expect Geno to start Aubrey guarding Maddy. However, remember last year when the Huskies had Aaliyah blanket Siegrist for a goodly share of their game (since Aubrey was missing). To me, that was Aaliyah's finest hour of an up and down soph season. Since 'Nova has few other offensive options, I wouldn't be surprised to see both Aubrey and Aaliyah seeing time guarding Maddy. I don't envy Siegrist that experience, as great as she is.

As for the BE DPOY, it does seem some here assume it's between Nika and Aubrey, as HuskyNan pointed out. I'd add the names Kennedy Fauntleroy and Kelsey Ransome to the mix. I'm guessing some BYers won't like that suggestion, but both of them are defensive pests and do lots of the things, maybe even more quickly, that Nika did last season to earn her award. For example, they combined for eight steals yesterday against the Huskies.

Aubrey is a good candidate but I’d also make a strong argument for Dorka. 2nd in the big east in rebounding, 3rd in blocked shots per game top ten in steals per game. Advanced metrics back this up as she leads the team in defensive win shares and defensive rating.

Dorka has played tough competition also overall. Still got to go with Aubrey anyway. She moves her feet like crazy and is laser focused. If Aubrey makes it in pro basketball it will be as a defensive force.

Nika, hands down. Aubrey can often lock down players with her length and athleticism, but she misses defensive switches and loses focus at times. Dorka has improved immensely on D.

Aubrey has always lost focus, 3 years in, 4 at UConn, Geno talking about players progression yesterday, year to year since their freshman year until now, year 3, Aaliyah and Nika yes Aubrey still gets lost in team concepts.

Nika has had a much bigger role this season, both offensively and defensively.

They will have to put Nika`s name on something for the season she is having. The logical thing is for her to repeat as DPOY.

Great to have two shut down defenders in Aubrey and Nika. In the past 3+ years, UConn has had several issues with opposing shooting guards; none this year have torched us. Have to give Nika the credit therefore she gets my vote.
