2012-13 Baylor gets my vote...other contenders:
1995 Tennessee
1999 Tennessee
1997 UCONN
2001 UCONN
2008 UCONN
2005 LSU
2006 North Carolina
2010 Stanford

Does anybody compete with Baylor for this 'title'?

not to mention, get knocked out three games short.

I'd say Baylor is close to the 2001 UCONN team. But they still have the title. But we'll see how the Baylor players do down the road.

2001 UCONN team had (or would have) 5 Olympians, 9 WNBA players, 2 NPOY, 2 Lieberman PGs, 5 AA's. That was a very good team.

If healthy, the 2001 UConn team was arguably the most talented team ever. It included 5 first-team All-Americans and 2 NPOYs. Plus 5 Lieberman awards.

That's the thing. Baylor did NOT have injuries as other teams on that list did.

2004 Duke :(

2008 UCONN

2008 Stanford

2006 UNC :)

1999 TENN :)

What stands out about that 2001 UConn team is that it was both preceded AND succeeded by UConn teams who did win it all, and did so in impressive fashion. The 2000 and 2002 UConn squads went a combined 76-1 en route to two NCs. The 2001 team had every starter on both of those sandwiching teams plus a kid like Maria Conlon (who would go on to be the starting PG on two NC-winning team in her own right).

That team, a full strength, was simply ridiculous.

But IIRC even before the injuries that team underperformed a bit. Didn't they lose a game at full strength inthe regular seaso?

When each player was in her collegiate prime, on paper 2001 UCONN was probably the most talented team of all time....but did not, however, produce as well as the 2000 or 2002 teams. At full strength they were pummeled by Notre Dame early in the season. Baylor lost a squeaker to Stanford without Sims and were ousted by a Louisville team that simply could not miss from 3. The only player on that UCONN team who had the best season of her college career in 2001 was Abrosimova. Ralph was a shadow of the player she was a year prior, Bird wasn't an All-American yet, Jones/Cash/Williams were all solid but not near the force they were in 2002, Taurasi wasn't an All-American caliber player yet. UCONN had more talent, but Notre Dame was a better team that year, they looked more cohesive on the court and the results spoke for themselves.

Despite the fact that 2013 Baylor wont win a championship, I think most people believe that Baylor was the best team in WCBB this year--I don't think people felt the same way during the 2001 season about UCONN. Baylor was the overwhelming favorites to repeat, in preseason and in the NCAA tournament, had the most dominant player in the history of the WCBB, and hadn't lost in 2 seasons with a healthy Sims. They knocked off UCONN and Notre Dame on the road and were never truly threatened when Sims was healthy.

I have always thought that ND team was a great example of everyone fitting into their role/position perfectly. ruth Riley was a great back to the basket center. ivey was a great PG. Ratay was one dimensional but gave them exactly what they needed. Same with Haney and the fifth starter whose name I'm blanking on.

If you believe in the best available athlete theory of building a sports team, 2001 Wcbb did not help make your case.

Alex - so true! That team was so stacked with talent. And they probably could have withstood one of the injuries, but the two combined were too much. And to have been in control of the semi-final at half time and then bomb down the stretch was really tough to take.

Sorry, but I think you are wrong about that 2001 team. I think before the two injuries that team was the most talented team that year. But it is hard to sustain when you lose two starting seniors late in the season. No question ND was a good team that year, but not good enough without the injuries on Uconn.

1997 Stanford, by far.

They should have. Best team ever assembled.
