My last trip to Sally's (4 years ago) 'featured' a wait in the booth closest to the ovens that was so long as to have a similar effect. Every pizza that went by us heightened the experience (perhaps even produced an altered state). I knew there was no chance that my companion would ever want to return, but we both agreed the pizza was outstanding, and I could say, "Yeah, that's part of coming here." My best and strongest Sally's memories are from 30+ years ago, when it was, "Bacon at Sally's, white clam at Pepe's, and The Spot will suffice if the lines are so long that the others in my party will get restless." Once I was gone from CT and thereafter discovered on rare days when I was passing through New Haven that Modern could make a pizza so tasty that I'd tip a take-out box like a diamond just to collect and eat the blackened crumbs at the end, I never went to Wooster street again until that trip to Sally's. Tomorrow night, we'll be doing Modern takeout, eating at gf's in Westville and going to a Bob Dylan words and music show at Lyric Hall. The other couple has only had Fairfield Pepe's, where I have had 70-30 good, but nothing close to transcendent. Now that I'm back to New Haven and have the proper company, I know we'll stand in line for both Pepe's & Sally's when the weather warms a bit, and I'll be able to send an update the next time this topic reappears. I'd like to get back to Zupardi's and Bar with her as well, plus so many suggested others that I have and haven't been to.
