I agree with you about the difficulty of the language as compared with other European languages. I took Latin in high school and so never really learned a modern foreign language (but boy am I good at deciphering words from their roots!). We went to Italy two summers ago and I was able to get by pretty well with what I learned from an introductory Michel Thomas lesson on CDs, but French eludes me.
