The Thing from Another World - 1951.

James Arness (Matt Dillon of Gunsmoke fame) played the thing.
I completely forgot about The Thing. The John Carpenter one is one of my all-time favorite movies and the best alien movie ever made, IMO.

Can we include Dune as an alien movie? It is sci fi about alien creatures that provide the spice.

Dune is a total masterpiece.

I always thought Independence Day was a very well done alien movie. Another alien movie that I like is Signs with Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix. That movie is very unique and goes about it in a different way.
Signs is great. M.Night Shamalamadingdong.

Prometheus without a doubt. Makes you think.
I forgot about Prometheus. That is a good one. The alien franchise has been well represented in this thread. Deservingly so.

"Game Over Man"-One of the great adlibs in movie history.
Ha ha, I think I quoted that on the Boneyard within the last week.

Alien is not just the greatest sci-fi film ever made, it is one of the best films ever made period. One rating ranks it #33 all time. It's Ridley Scott's masterpiece and it launched his directing career as well as Sigurney Weaver's. Veronica Cartright, Ian Holm, John Hurt, Tom Skerrit, Yaphet Kotto and Harry Dean Stanton all give stunning performances. It's a crime that Veronica Cartright was not even nominated for an supporting actress Oscar, though she did win best supporting actress from other award venues. Jerry Goldsmith's musical score was stunning. Twentieth Century Fox also loved it, they bankrolled it on a $10 million budget, and it made $200 million in box office receipts. That's not including profits from about ten sequels and the media franchise it created.

Paxton steals that movie, he's terrific in it.
He was a really entertaining actor and from all accounts a great guy, he left us way too soon. Watched Weird Science last night, he steals all his scenes in that too.

As a kid in the 60s back when we were still doing nuclear bomb drills in school, I recall the most terrifying movie to me was the original "Them". I mean, let's say you survive a nuclear attack. Now you've got to deal with 12 ft long man-eating ants...
