I sure hope Mir buckles down and learns what she needs so we can see her full potential. I think she will really open some eyes. She is so impressive as an athlete. I hope to see her chosen as one of four or five Huskies in the top ten of the 2024 WNBA draft.

Williams is not in my best 5 because she is too inconsistent. If here shot is not going in she just doesn't contribute as much as the others.
Christyn is shooting 49% from the field, 35% from 3 and 81% free throws averaging 17.5 points per game (second to Paige at 18), She averages 5 rebounds and almost 3 assists a game. Her assist to turnover ration is 2.2 (Paige is 1.4)

She is definitely in the top 5. To think that someone would think they know the 5 players that should start a game over Geno Auriemma is mind blowing. If Geno starts Piath, Mir, Autumn, and Nika with a crutch, that's the 5 that give us the best chance to win.

What I see so far in Aubrey and Mir is that their size, regardless of leaping ability, suits them better for a wing position. They are tweeners. They don't have the size to move Liv or Aaliyah out of the post and don't have the ball handling, passing, and court vision to be effective wings in the 4 out offense. They may shine in the open court and be terrors on the offensive boards but without the skills to facilitate the offense they will find their minutes limited to situational substitutions. Defensively Aubrey is a player and Mir probably will be, but their minutes will be limited until they can flow in the 4 out.

The OP that started this thread was definitely wrong about Christyn Williams. I did not see where the OP was questioning Geno selection of starters. Your last sentence in a little over the top - if Geno were to start "Piath, Mir, Autumn, and Nika" I would question you for not questioning him. :D

Coco, excellent point. The best, most productive 5 might not be the starting 5 for some obvious reasons. Usually you need at least 1 big, a couple of guards that can shoot, maybe a lock down defender, someone you trust to keep her head and not make mistakes. Maybe one of the "best 5" comes off the bench to shock the other team when they are a little winded.

I got an idea, even though the BY'ers know more, why don't we leave this to coach Geno who has had a decent record over the years :)
I agree with you but what would Huskie fans do during a pandemic for fun.

Completely confused by the questions and even more so by the qualifiers such as "this is not about who should be starting" Are you simply trying to identify the 5 most productive players regardless of position and the current starting lineup? If that is the case suggest you use @JRRRJ link & spread sheet which normalizes the stats on a per 40 minutes basis. Per-40 stats updated for Seton Hall.
You still have to be careful though and might want to wait a few more games. That spread sheet might lead you to believe that our best (most productive) players are sitting on the bench. BTW Christyn Williams is and has been doing plenty of other things to help the team when her shot is not falling.

Coco, I'm confused why you're confused. What's so hard to understand about "this is not about who should be starting"? Geno has his starting 5. Who am to say he's got it wrong. I just thought it might be interesting to see who everyone thought were the best or most productive 5 regardless of whether they're a starter of not.

I waited to respond o you until after JRRRJ posted his spreadsheet thru Xavier because I said right now as of Sun 12/20. I downloaded his spreadsheet and added a "Rank" column for each of 11 different stats. Yes, I arbitrarily selected the 11 stats but I think they're pretty inclusive of measuring overall production. Here's my expanded version.

Even though Mir ranks first with the lowest ranking points (I assigned a "1" to the best production in each category, etc.) I would eliminate her from the overall ranking because of her minutes sample size.

I was wrong about picking Anna ahead of Evina as the numbers show. Based on the 40 minute normalized stats, Evina is clearly one of the 5 "best. The rest I had pegged including my exclusion of CW In spite of some posters talking about her rebounding, she actually comes up woefully short in defensive and total rebounds which doesn't surprise me considering her obvious proclivity to be most interested in how many points she can score rather than making the play that's best for her team.

And of course the top 5 as of Xavier many be totally different on 1/15 or any other date.

Well this certainly clear things up-NOT! You can't do a player productivity analysis based on how we all "feel" otherwise people might conclude (feel ?) that you don't like Christyn based on your prior statement that she was not contributing very much and this last statement that she is "most interested in how many points she can score rather than making the play that's best for her team." Don't get so caught up in your feelings: What's best for the team is for CW to aggressive & score a bunch of points. That's both by her job description (SG) and Geno repeated urging.
You can certainly do a productivity analysis based on stats which I take this second attempt to be but you have to be very very careful as I said in my last response.
Lastly in addition to normalizing for 40 minutes you must also come to the realization that starting matters in basketball and all other sports. Productivity of a starter is not the same as productivity of a bench player. If you require further explanation of that that last sentence , please give me a few days to acquire the patience to do so.

PS You are allowed not to like CW, you don't even have to give a reason.

You can just admit that you don’t like CW

That would be too easy, he/she would rather baffle all of us with spreadsheets, rank each stat category to prove his/her point as to why he/she does not like CW. :(

Any statistical analysis without some degree of the subjectivity of the eye test is flawed. Frankly, so is any statistical analysis with subjectivity thrown in. The best team is one where the players complement and play off each other, they make each other better, “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”. Auriemma and Dailey have always understood that and their genius is not in having the best player in WCBB as one poster said but in getting the best player in WCBB to play completely within a team concept, both offensively and defensively. No prima donnas, no playing for me.

The games vs Baylor & SC will determine whether UConn can basically start Liv and 4 big guards, or they are forced to start either Aaliyah or Aubrey, and give up some offense in the process. I actually believe that Geno will stick with the lineup he’s currently using. The offensive movement, great passing and ability to put up lots of points makes UConn a nightmare for any team to defend.

IMO, the only way the current lineup changes is if someone gets injured. Got my fingers crossed that Evina stays healthy and continues to play great.
Current starting lineup is looking good, and you have 2 disrupters in AE & AG coming off the bench. While Evina may turn out to be a better player for now Anna fits into the current scheme. Having 2 true impact players with physical superiority coming off the bench can not be ignored.

Really?

I got the same 5 Geno has been starting in each of the first 4 games. Evina has been the glue that holds this team together, doing whatever is necessary to help the team win, while providing great leadership to a young team.

The suggestion that Christyn does not contribute much if her shot is not falling is just flat out wrong. Christyn’s defense has improved significantly and she is one of the better rebounding guards I’ve seen. Her passing has also improved as well.

Aubrey & Aaliyah are providing solid minutes off the bench, and that’s exactly how the rotation should be at this point in the season.

Agree with all 5. So long as Evina's scoring arc is in the ascent, she should be included. Eventually, Aaliyah will have to get extended time and may start against a tall team. The key is point production and its source. If Christyn can keep up her scoring, we're in great shape.

I like your wording, but I'm going to use it in a different context. Remember when Bria Hartley would have a shooting slump? What was wrong? Her shot was too flat, and the ball kicked out. When she focused on putting a little more air under the ball, the results were better. Kia Nurse had exactly the same experience. I noticed in Saturday's game that Christyn's 3-pointers seemed to be shot higher than previously, mimicking Tiffany Hayes's moon balls, and her results were excellent. I think Squeaks is on the right track.

I'm with coco here. I don't understand what you're trying to do here. I don't even understand the stats you are using. For example- CWill is shooting 35% from 3. Am I reading your stats right - that she is 1st? She isn't. And why is CWill 11th in Def Reb? She has the 3rd best rebounding average. Is it that she is 11th on a 40 minute basis?

You know overall Aubrey Griffin has the best fg%. What does it mean in terms of who is the best offensive player? Because it certainly isn't her.
