Benedict and Mora

-> Akron’s season ended on Tuesday with a win over Bowling Green to finish with a 5-7 record, and head coach Joe Moorhead could be a name to watch at a few places. That includes the offensive coordinator job at Virginia Tech under Franklin or the UConn head job if Jim Mora leaves. Moorhead was Franklin’s OC at Penn State from 2016 to ‘17, and he was the OC on the 2010 UConn team that reached the Fiesta Bowl. Mora himself has received interest from jobs out west, like Oregon State and Stanford. <-

Maybe I'm in the minority but if Mora were to go West, not sure I'd want Moorhead. Feel like his time has come and gone

I agree. I could think of several guys I’d be interested in. Moorehead isn’t among them.

Moorhead is yesterdays news, and Randy was perpetually pissed off at Hathaway his last 2 years, Had he gotten the help in Admission and Retention he wanted, things might have been different.

Is Chesney the guy maybe?

Chesney is a great coach but he is currently at James Madison. He is on the list for Penn State and UCLA head coaching jobs and will get a P4 head coaching job in the near future. He has James Madison at the cusp to make the CFP this year. Realistically why would he leave James Madison for UConn?

Probably not at UConn... if he's inclined to leave JMU he'll likely have multiple P4 opportunities.

Has Chesney built up JMU or did he inherit a program that was already killing it? I thought they were doing great before he got there.
Previous coach took a lot of the talent to Indiana with him. I think it would be highly unlikely he would take UConn head coaching job.

James Madison had been to the playoffs every year from 2014 to their upgrade after the 2021 season. They've been to bowls 3 of the last 4 (counting this year; 2022 they were ineligible due to the transition). If you want to give someone credit for the initial build it's probably Everett Withers and Mike Houston (who won their only FCS championship). Cignetti kept it going and managed the upgrade & now is killing it at Indiana; Chesney has kept things going and has every chance of sneaking into the playoffs if the AAC manage to keep beating each other (Temple has the chance to kill off both Tulane and North Texas).

I hope coaches like Kevin Cahill and Andrew Aurich.

Cahill is probably the better candidate for us. I’d like someone with recruiting experience in the NIL era, but that’s probably not critical.

Dave ran a very tight interview process last time. I mean, I don't think anyone saw Mora as a candidate. So wouldn't put too much weight into Moorehead talk, if Jim does leave.

Excuse my French but Jim ain’t leaving
I'm with you.

I think that if we continue to treat him well as a fan base, he really has no reason to leave. If I'm in his position, where I've accomplished this great rebuild and the people love me for it and I'm relatively well paid, why on earth would I leave???

So he’s already past us? We need the Chesney at HOLY Cross or the equivalent. Don’t know who that is. How about Ryan Carty at Delaware. He’s good but not too good.

I agree. Granted I’d imagine expectations at Stanford or Wash St are not off the charts but is he really going to take either of those teams to a NC? Wash St isn’t even P4 and Stanford recruits like us (I don’t know this for a fact but feel like they probably do).

Why leave a program that you have got running on all cylinders and start over? He’s not a young and up and coming coach. He has no need to leave to grow his career. Why leave and risk ending your career by being fired from a job that doesn’t get what it wants in a short time frame because it doesn’t want to wait.

It seems like a no brainer to stay but that’s exactly why he’ll leave….lol

I've held off on speculating about Mora because I'm worried, really worried. In the last 4 years he's gotten as many wins so far (26) as we had from 2012-2021. He has accomplished what many may consider a miracle turnaround for a team that was so dreadful. Our defense this year isn't as great as last year's, and our offense next year is poised (on paper, due to graduation) to be considerably weaker compared to this year. That's another rebuild with moderate resources against a tougher schedule, and there's no guarantee that our running game will be the same. As much as I want to believe and think Mora wants to continue to fight for/with us, that writing on the wall is looking awfully big. I hope to God I'm wrong. I love what Mora has done for us, and I pray he stays.

Hopefully, he understands that most of us realize we may take a big step back next year and are prepared for it. I don’t think he’s a football genius. He’s a big picture, program builder kind of coach. He’s going to need good assistants and NIL support, but if he has that, he will run a very competitive program.

Makes 800k at JMU, Mora gets 2.5M at UConn and people know UConn is fighting to get into a P4 which would bring even more money. That's subjective though because you don't know what the future holds. He would get back up into the northeast if that's a thing for him.

That said, I like Mora and don't think he's leaving. More worried that Sammis would get plucked than Mora.

Yeah Chesney is not coming here. He will get a job offer that will be multiple of $2.5 million. I think he will wait for the right P4 job.

Looking back, I think HCRE underachieved first go around. He had every possible advantage to start. He did fine. But the program stalled out and he was too busy looking to escape to take us to the next level. If only he got the GTech job. I agree with those he said he never really believed in UConn FB.
I thought he left because he hated Jeff Hathaway.

Correct, wasn't getting supported in areas where his competitors had no friction. Admissions and Retention. Needed the next level kid that would be a "risk". The Grad School debacle with, can't remember, Robbie Frey or a QB from PA(Old Timers disease compounded by CRS)?

I don't think he is either, because I don't think Mora is leaving either. But you asked and I proffered.

You know, reading Moras quotes about life lessons in FB makes me optimistic about his return. He understands the what have you done for me lately mentality of ATHLETICS. If he were to sit down with the team in the next week or so and tell them: “UConn FB is just getting started. I want all of you to know I am excited to write chapter 2, After the Rebuild. Let’s see what we can do together!” I would think those who can return would(+$), and it might really open the Portal gates! Go Huskies!!

Benedict is either going to be rewriting Moras contract this week, reaching out to his Rolodex of potential HC candidates, or interviewing for a job himself. Let’s hope for option1!!

GO HUSKIES.
