I have come to the conclusion that Ben Cherington is in way over his head. He has been in his job for a little over a year and the Sox have gone from being a contender to the doormat of the American League East. All around other teams are making moves to strengthen themselves while Ben does virtually nothing. To wit, so far he has signed Ross a backup catcher and Johnny Gomes, a weak fielding average hitting outfielder. Oh yes, yesterday he traded three players away for cash and/or players to be named later. Even the players that the Sox are talking to do not get the blood rushing. Mike Napoli has had one solid year offensively and wants to catch for someone. The Sox want him to play first base. He is poor defensively at either position.
In his most significant move, he traded away a ton of talent for prospects who are looking less and less like contributors anytime in the near future, if ever.
If this is being orchestrated from above, then shame on Ben for taking a nothing job.
