Very much old school but good stuff.John Bechtle got a classy shout out from Union (NJ) HS Football for his hard earned and well deserved UConn scholarship. How cool that it came from Union. John had been a standout player at Watchung Hills HS, one of Union’s rivals in the Big Central Conference.
Key to the backdoor if needed <<
-> Jacob Flynn walked on to the UConn football program, and for three years he worked and walked among the multitude of players largely anonymous. He kept quiet, kept his head down, kept at it. Then one day last spring, one of the new coaches, passing game coordinator John Allen, stopped him and barked, “Hey, stop acting like a walk-on, you’re good enough.”
“I didn’t have it in my head that I was acting like a walk-on,” Flynn said. “But I understood and it really helped. It was kind of like, ‘don’t act scared, nervous.’ It built my confidence up.”<-
“You know, I was a walk-on at University of Washington and earned a scholarship my freshman year. So I just have a deep appreciation for guys that are in that situation.”I’m pretty sure that’s a change in culture. Randy gave scholarships to walk-ons too but I guarantee you Mora treats them better.
I’m pretty sure that’s a change in culture. Randy gave scholarships to walk-ons too but I guarantee you Mora treats them better. This is a 62 year old guy that knows how to coach like a 42 year old guy. He doesn’t scare you into being better, he builds you up to be better.
