BE Regular Season tie breaker

Why are we guessing? If UConn and St John’s both win out and Creighton and Providence end up tied, the tie between UConn and St John’s would be broken by NET rankings (which would mean we would be the #1 seed).
Interesting - would never have thought the NET would be the tie breaker.

Thanks. I see that now. I thought it would make sense to punish the team that lost to the lower seed, but instead they are rewarding the team that beat the higher seed twice. I suppose either way could make sense but thanks for straightening me out!
That's what you get for thinking it would make sense

It seems like that tie breaker rewards the team for losing to a worse team? Doesn't make sense at all.

This is pretty much the universal tiebreaker in college sports. Sometimes in a sport like volleyball, there will be another layer where they’ll take sets won head to head - so if you won 3-0 and lost 3-2, you’d win the tiebreaker by being better head to head. But point differential in hoops or run differential in baseball would encourage running up the score.

The tiebreaker works better when it’s lower in the standings - if you tied for fourth (and split head to head), and one of you beat the first place team, then that team wins the tiebreaker since it has a better win. The tiebreaker for fourth is often the tiebreaker just to get into the conference tournament for sports where not every team goes.

So there’s a lot at stake in those tiebreakers - whereas two teams that tie for first are both going anyway. Once this system came into place - leagues wanted to be consistent, and it was just sort of how it evolved in college sports.

I know the default is that we all want the 1 seed in the BET, but is it weird that I’d feel more confident against Nova than Seton Hall — and maybe even Providence or Creighton? However, Hall could fall to the 6, so there's lots to be determined still. I also feel like we're less likely to come out slow in a night game (2 seed) than @ noon (1 seed) in the Thursday quarterfinals lol.
That noon game after five days off, against a team that's already played, is a tough game to win.

If a series is split, they should total the points between both games and the team with more total points get the tie breaker. Idk why this isn’t done. It fees fair for the team who won their half of the split by more points to get the tie breaker. Plus, it’s so much simpler than:

Win Saturday, win the Big East Tournament as a 1 or 2
Seed, enter the NCAAs at 31-3 and a #1
seed and I’m good!

And PC finishes the season Saturday at Georgetown. Georgetown beat them in Providence 81-78 on 1/24. Needing PC to win that game pretty much guarantees they lay an egg.
You do know that fryers don’t lay eggs, right? They’re too young and tender!
