You forgot Prima Nocte. Whaler believes ESPN has that right too.

Like I said, I'm a moron.... ESPN doesn't have a dozen other options and weak states like Rhode Island haven't been picking off much less important employers than ESPN.

Boston College is a 115 lb weakling and they haven't used every ounce of their leverage against Connecticut? I'm sure an industry giant like ESPN will just roll over because a couple of lawyers get involved.

Don't you think it would be cost inhibitive to just pick up and leave with all the telecommunications they have set up in Bristol? The deal the state gave them is beyond a sweetheart deal. I think the state has every right to make sure their investment in UConn isn't screwed over by someone they have given tax breaks too.

If picking up and leaving is cost prohibitive---and I have no idea whether it is---then shame on the State for giving them what you term a sweetheart deal. The state shouldn't give different deals to different employers as far as I am concerned. Regardless, it seems to me that the ESPN suits convinced Connecticut legislators that relocating is a feasible option for the company. Either that, or they bought them off. Neither assumption is helpful to UConn's cause....

New piece from Jeff Jacobs, the first couple of paragraphs are quite amusing. Here's an excerpt:

On Tuesday morning it was clear either A. DeFilippo saved the ACC from the evils of geographic rivalry, something that must be news to North Carolina and Duke, or B. exposed himself as the BCS poster boy for vindictiveness, pettiness, retribution and insecurity. By late Tuesday afternoon, after he had sent a letter of apology to ACC presidents, it was clear DeFilippo chose B.

"While I harbor some ill feelings toward UConn regarding the lawsuit, depositions and derogatory comments from UConn officials when we announced our decision to join the ACC, it was inappropriate to express personal feelings that might have been construed as the position of BC or the ACC," DeFilippo said.

On Tuesday morning, it also was clear either A. DeFilippo stood as one of the great whistle blowers in major college athletics or B. had de-filipped his lid. By late Tuesday afternoon, after he had apologized for saying ESPN told the league to add Pittsburgh and Syracuse, it was clear DeFilippo again chose B.

I thought making fun of people's names was beneath you. Or is that just when people make fun of Marinatto or Marinara, Marinate's name?
that one went over my head. Please explicate.

Do a little research on Malloy's First Five program. They didn't threaten to move jobs, but they got a ridiculous deal just like CIGNA and the ticket scalper.

Would you all friggin stop it. On this and twenty similar threads, where everything is argued as if if it's not black it's necessarily totally white.

The State of Connecticut and ESPN are not going to war. Both of them have way, way too much to lose than whether UConn is or isn't in the right athetic conference. But the fact that they're not going to war doesn't mean that the Governor or Attorney General (George Jepson, not Dick Blumenthal) need to sit down with ESPN and have a talk about how not to damage the ongoing relationship between the two partners. Despite Waylon's moral and absolute clarity on things he can't know for sure, we don't know how close to what Flipper said the other day ESPN did ESPN actually did.. I tend to think ESPN isn't that stupid, but, unlike Waylon, I'd be the first to admit I don't know for sure. But the fact that Flipper said ESPN did this puts ESPN in a position whereby they need to do right by their partner. If Mizzou is not moving, and the SEC has an odd number, if it goes for an ACC team I expect ESPN to speak more clearly to the ACC about what ESPN needs to happen if the ACC wants to be a good partner to ESPN.

And a note to Flipper -- if you retracted your statement because the ACC ordered you to, fine. But if you did it because your lawyers told you to, you need better lawyers. Statements against interest are belived by judges and juries much, much, much more than their retractions. Very few people imply they've broken antitrust laws and aided and abedded others in violating contractual duties of good faith and fair dealing. When they do, those statements tend to be given a lot of worth. Retractions that translate into your best impression of an Emily Letalla "never mind" -- not so much.

That's what is bothering you at the moment Noey?

To be honest, I was too lazy to bother spelling his name correctly and used that is the easy way out. If it bothered someone, I apologize. If anyone thought it was making fun of Italian (? -- I don't even know his ethnic background) than it shouldn't have been said.

Happy?

.-.
The stuff he was called by Cuse people was the worst, and in public academic settings.

You say he's consistent, but actually the grudge thing is a distraction. BC is afraid of UConn, and wants New England to itself. That's the real reason.
You keep spewing this talking point and yet never post what the Cuse people said. UConn and the other non-Syracuse football schools sued the ACC, BC, and the Flipper individually in the lawsuit. That is a lot worse than being a called a liar, and post the link to these comments.

It is not bothering me. It was an observation. You took exception with people mocking Marinatto's name, but you used Flipper. I'm not Italian, and I'm not sensitive. Again, It didn't bother me in the least, and what is bothering me is the uncertainty around our conference affiliation.

I represent the estate of Flipper the dolphin. My clients are bothered deeply by the repeated misuse of Flipper's great name to reference a duplicitous, small minded, soon-to-be-unemployed, slouch of a poor excuse for a human being from a junior college for underachieving rich kids whose parents need to overpay to create the delusion that their children are going to college and being instilled with anything resembling a shred of basic ethical decency. We demand that you immediately cease and desist this abhorrent practice.

Pitt sued. They're in the ACC.
IT was a Cuse trustee that publicly called him a liar at an academic event in earshot of many others.
I don't give a fig if you don't believe me. It's not meant for you, but for the consumption of UConn fans, many of whom have already chimed in and remembered the name of the trustee and how we all learned of the story.

CTO, I think, from the old SU board posted the story. It was definitely a SU poster who was there. According to them it was a pretty embarrassing moment.

Wasn't CTO the trustee? IIRC she's a big cheese at Cuse with an inexplicable fondness for UConn.

.-.
Flipper will not survive much longer. I would bet that Father L. has been contacted by the ACC and other school official to get this clown unemployed ASAP. I do a few cases in retirement mostly as a consultant atty. and I had a plaintiff today who was confronted with the fact that he had made a damning statement against his own interest. The case evaporated with not so much as a token offer from defendant. Nice for me, the employing firm and client. ACC really regrets accepting Miami and BC. Both dishonest and both not very good on the field or in the gym either.

So what your saying is that they fit in perfectly with Swofford and the rest of the conference?! :)

Got a chuckle out of this line from Jacobs:

"Even my own arguments with Calhoun don't last seven years. Let's get over it."

Based on some of his articles about Calhoun last season, I'm not sure if Jacobs has gotten over things.

LoL. I have to agree with you. JJ has not gotten over his animosity with JC. Maybe this set of events will change him.

Hey John, you've got some mozzarella cheese dribbling off of your chin. Oh, yeah. Don't forget to pick up Jack Swarbrick at the airport.

Jacob's arguments with Calhoun don't last 7 years...they last longer!

LOLOLOLOL

I agree with the first sentence. Otherwise, I think your argument is that we should be cheering for ESPN to wipe out our athletic program. That I can not agree with.

Kidding aside, if you think we are all finished and the athletic program is ruined and there is nothing we can do, why do you keep posting here? Is it basic trolling?

Yeah, that was great. At least he's able to use some self-deprecating humor about his inability to get over arguments. GdF will just keep crying 10 years from now when he's Assistant AD at UMass.

How is pointing out that suing ESPN might be counterproductive trolling? Who is cheering for ESPN? I don't think we are finished and have never implied that we are.

Don't you have to get back to cutting letters out of magazines for your next bulk mailing?
