children, new or newish to the game, should absolutely be taught to box out, for the simple reason that it makes them, at least, turn and look to where the ball is currently going, and not continue to stare at nothingness. they can't even think of grabbing it if they can't see it.
they're children, and highly prone to, when not seeing the task at hand, drifting off into thoughts of the crowd, or their sock game, or if coach will be taking them to micky d's after.
i also teach free throw shooting to the new and newish to the game, by having them stand at the line, then shaking their seemingly dominant hand, and grabbing the index finger - 'take this, point it at the front of the rim, then throw it up there doing that as best as u can.' of course, an observant coach will notice if they are naturally hardwired to lead with the middle finger. amazingly successful as an intro to 'shooting.'
i luv the drill where the player, of any age, holds the ball between the legs with one hand in front of the body, and one hand behind, then switches hands without letting it drop, over and over.
makes them at one with the ball.
sometimes, i give them a greased ball. touch, finger tips, an all that.
once this is reasonably accomplished, then we move on to 'same kind of body movement, now, just dribble it around and thru the legs.'
be the ball.
