Wow, surprised to see the Big East at the top of the list. How in the world did those ten small private schools pull that off? Guess we know why they were in such a hurry to break free what became the AAC!

There's something wrong with those numbers.

There's no way a conference turned a profit of $154M on basketball.

I agree with Fishy. The numbers don't add up. It would be interesting to see how they calculated all the data including revenue.

Edit: There appears to be a link. . .but it doesn't say how Statistic Brain generated the dat. There is other data on the page appears to be inconsistent with published reports. Who knows how they calculated it.

Me too. Maybe you take into account that some of them probably spend bupkus on their programs. I don't know about now but up until a few years ago, Seton Hall for example only flew commercial flights. While their location makes it somewhat more practical, it is still problematic.

The Big East has ten schools...that means that the schools are pulling in an average of $15M in profit on basketball alone.

I would be surprised if there were even one school making that stated average...so I looked up the likely culprit, Marquette, to see what their numbers were like.

Their hoop program had $16M in revenue and $10M in expenses - their profit was $5M. No other Big East is even close in terms of revenue and as such, their profit is equally lower.

And there's basically no NCAA tournament credits due that conference this year.

The numbers are simply inaccurate, not just for the Big East, but likely all of the conferences.

I checked the Statista web site and they don't appear to have any Big East data more recent than 2013 which likely includes all the former Big East teams. I think the journalist took the data and made some assumptions. The page verified the sats on April 2014 but it was likely using 2013 data.

The Big East probably made the most profit, but it was spread out over 18 teams. Also bear in mind, the data includes the NCAA tourney payouts.

Schools usually wrap their fiscal years in June, I think, so that data is probably from 2012/13 season.

The article linked in the article says those numbers are from research he did for another article in 2011.

The recent article has Xavier with a profit of 7m and 2011 6m, they're basically the top BE earner. If every BE school was their equal you'd get 70m. That is far from the case.

There is some fuzzy math going on in that 2011 research as well. FSU Football profited less than Wyoming Football and 1/4 of Indiana State Basketball. Really?!?
