Game Notes
- The UConn pitching staff totaled 14 strikeouts on the day, most since equaling that mark in a season-best performance at Villanova on April 13, 2013. The Huskies notched double-digit strikeouts in eight contests in 2013.
- Eric Yavarone’s three-hit game was the fourth of his career and first since April 24, 2013 at Bryant.
- Jack Sundberg went 3-for-4, picking up his first multi-hit game of the season and tying a career-high with three hits. He had just one multi-hit outing in his freshman campaign a year ago, also a 3-for-4 performance at Sam Houston State on March 9, 2013.
- Max Slade (Cheshire, Conn.) came on for the sixth inning and struck out two batters, the first time in his career he has notched multiple strikeouts in a one-inning outing.
- Vinny Siena’s eighth inning-double extended his hitting streak to nine games, dating back to last season. He has also reached safely in 15 consecutive contests.
- Nico Darras has hit safely in each of his three starts for UConn this season.

Up next, UConn continues play in the Baseball at the Beach Tournament when it takes on George Mason tomorrow. First pitch with the Patriots, who defeated Illinois, 3-0, earlier today, is set for 6 p.m.

There are three games taking place today at Myrtle Beach. The first one between George Mason and Wichita State started at 11am, went 13 innings, and almost four hours. Second game with Coastal Carolina and Illinois started just a few minutes ago at about 3:45. So it looks like the UConn game will be delayed well beyond the 6pm scheduled start.

In the game against George Mason, the Huskies have run into a team that is suffering from the fielding yips. The Huskies have taken advantage with some good hitting. UConn up 6-0 going after four innings. Marzi has struggled a little bit, getting out of a bases loaded situation in the first inning, but also has six strike outs so far.

UConn concludes its time in Myrtle Beach with a 10 a.m. match-up against Illinois tomorrow morning. Senior southpaw Brian Ward (Milford, Conn.) will make his second start of the year on the mound for the Huskies.

Up next, UConn continues its early season southern tour when it visits Nashville for its first set of true road games. The Huskies will battle the Bisons of Lipscomb on Feb. 28-March 2 in a non-conference road series.

- UConn’s offense notched at least 12 hits in every game in Myrtle Beach, totaling 39 over the three games. The Huskies had a season-high 14 hits in the win today.
- The Connecticut pitching staff allowed three runs in 28 innings over the course of the tournament, including 12.1 scoreless innings from the bullpen.
- Jack Sundberg had multiple hits in all three games, finishing 8-for-13 in the tournament
- Eric Yavarone hit safely in all three games at the tournament, going 7-for-13 at the plate
- Vinny Siena’s third inning single extended his hitting streak to 11 games, dating back to last season. He has hit safely in all six games this year and has reached base in 17 straight games. Siena also posted his first three-hit day of the season.
- Overall in UConn’s three games in the tournament, the Huskies out-scored their opponents 19-3.

Wow, what a difference 1 week can make, vast improvement over last weekend and gives much hope to season ahead. Especially with Verdi still haven't played yet. Anyone know what his injury is since I did see he was able to pinch run Friday night. Also, anyone know the story with Olmstead this year, are they redshirting him?

Sprained wrist for Verdi. The WHUS guys said he started fielding grounders this weekend so return is probable by next week. Not sure about Olmstead but it sure looks like they have logjam in the OF.

Needless to say, the pitching was tremendous over the weekend, both from the starters and from the bullpen. The only thing to quibble about was that there were a few too many walks issued by the Husky pitchers, particularly by the starters but the opposition generally was not able to take advantage of the freebies. In a big change from the previous weekend the defense in support of the pitching was much improved.

While all the Husky relievers did well, the standout performance out of the bullpen was Anthony Kay’s dominating effort out of the bullpen on Friday night. If Kay ends up being anywhere near this effective over the next few weeks, then Kay might be much too valuable to be a middle of the week starter. Coach Penders might want him available for weekend conference games either as a starter or a reliever. Even though none of the starters went deep into their games, they were all effective. This is especially true of Brian Ward, who I would think would be the most likely of the three weekend starters to get moved to the middle of the week if Kay ends up a weekend starter this season. It’s going to be interesting to see how Kay’s role on the club plays out.

Coach Penders has always been a big advocate of aggressive base running. However, this particular weekend it seemed the Huskies had very few stolen base attempts. Consequently, very few players were thrown out on the base paths trying to steal, or for that matter trying to take an extra base. Penders did not totally abandon the “small ball” game, as it seemed that UConn was attempting a bunt almost any time the Huskies had runners on first or second with no outs. UConn hitters so farhave not showed much in the way of power so far.

Anyway, I expect the UConn running game might pick up with the return of Tom Verdi, as it sounds like he will be back in the lineup next weekend in the series against Lipscomb. I’m guessing Verdi will be back in the leadoff spot in the lineup, and in the past he has always had something of a green light to steal when he gets on base.

During the preseason Penders had been talking up how hard Jack Sundberg had worked and how much he had improved since last year. I was a bit skeptical at first, but Sundberg has had a terrific start to the season, hitting .444 and adding in five walks to the five games he has played. It certainly looks like he is becoming a fixture in Center Field. Penders had been talking about him batting ninth, but with Verdi coming back, I’d like to see Sundberg stay towards the top of the order given how well he has been producing on offense.
