Bands You Missed Out On

Any bands that you should have been a bigger fan of or like better but for whatever reason it took you a while to figure them out?

For me, Jane's Addiction. Right in my wheelhouse age-wise as I was in college and a young adult for most of their stuff. I had a roommate for 2 years who was in to them and played them plenty. I listened to enough other similar music in that timeframe.

But it wasn't until about 5 years ago I started giving them more play time and really getting in to their music.
Still holds up well.

The two that come immediately to mind are MC5 and Maze. I was shamefully really late to Maze.

I wish I was a bigger fan of Bachman Turner Overdrive when I was a teen. And Judas Priest, too. Didn't appreciate them back in the 80s. Also, R.E.M. never grabbed me like they should have.

Not just a concert but more along the lines of you weren't in to AC/DC when they were in their prime but realized later on you liked their music.

I wish I was a bigger fan of Bachman Turner Overdrive when I was a teen. And Judas Priest, too. Didn't appreciate them back in the 80s. Also, R.E.M. never grabbed me like they should have.

I was fringe in to REM in HS in the 80's. Needless to say the Shiny Happy People and Everybody Hurts killed any future of liking them.

My mother would not let me go to MSG (from Stamford) in the fall of 1980 to see the Commodores, because it was a school night. Opening act was Bob Marley and the Wailers. Missed. Forever. Luckily, I got to see Peter Tosh twice (while at UCONN), and have seen Bunny Wailer on numerous occassions. Try to catch him while he is still with us before he returns to Jah . .

I also have UCONN friends who were at the U2 shows at Trinity College in the summer of 1983. That would have been awesome

This seems response so obvious it is cliche, but Led Zeppelin. I was too young really to see them, by the time I went to my first concert in 1980 they'd disbanded and been done touring for 3 years. And they had the critical & popular back-lash that even though their music was and is still played, its cooler to say you are into smaller bands.
Also Queen which I've mentioned before and hope to somewhat undo by seeing the movie this fall.

I don't think there's any way I didn't hear "Fade Into You" while I was in college, but it just didn't sink in. I'd heard the name Mazzy Star somewhere but just never checked into them. Fast forward about 20 years and now I started digging a bunch of their songs. Better way late than never. However I was just a tad bit late to catch them when they did a reunion tour after a very long hiatus.

I didn't really jump on board with grunge metal when it was massively popular (and all the bands are from my neck of the woods even), but got more into it about the time it started fading. I will proudly claim that I much prefer Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, even though Pearl Jam and Nirvana were much more popular.

I was kind of into Evanescence when they first hit it big, but eventually all but forgot about them. I've only just recently realized that there were a whole bunch of European bands doing something kind of similar, but better, before them, and have continued to do it for a long time. Goth and symphonic metal is good stuff. Within Temptation is probably the best in my opinion but there are a bunch of others.

Thanks storrsroars, that has a nice groove to it. Once I started down the rabbit hole with Mazzy, several other bands I found in a similar vein are Speck Mountain, Widowspeak and Still Corners.

regret not heading to the HCC and seeing bands like Van Halen, The Cars, The Police, Foreigner, Journey, etc back in the 80s. And while I went to shows at smaller places like the Agora, Palace, etc, wish I had seen more of the new wave/punk bands that came through here.

The White Stripes.

I remember seeing their Grammy performance in 2004 and thought it was awful. Came to appreciate them around the time they broke up (2011) and bought all their albums in a week. They were just raw and powerful.

Yeah, we hear Seven Nation Army at every freaking sporting event, but put your stereo on 11 and listen to Ball and a Biscuit.


Every one of their albums is chock full of gems. I'm a big fan of Icky Thump.

I got to see Jack White a few years ago supporting his first solo album which I liked a lot. His subsequent offerings haven't thrilled me all that much.

Oddly enough - I didn't miss out on them - I ended up in Amsterdam when they were hot and someone put me on to them - one of my favorite bands!

Grateful Dead and the Cure. I was friends with a lot of Dead heads in high school and college, and probably had 20 opportunities to go see a show, and I kept procrastinating, figuring that they were always touring and I could see them later.

I didn't start liking the Cure until well after college.

it seemed like in their heyday bands like the Cure and Depeche Mode didn't play the east coast that much.

Back in the day they were one of the best live acts around. So much passion and energy. Saw them in 91 down in Miami at an outdoor amphitheater and it was amazing. Got in on a fake ticket and even got high with a security dude. Once Perry got into the Porno for Pyros stuff they kind of went down hill. And today he cant sing like he used to either, pretty sad to see.
