Ball State Post Game Thread

No question, Brock can't change the scheme mid season. If you all think the defense sucks now and they play sloppy missing tackles and miss assignments and are not where they are supposed to be, you will see these issues 3x more with a scheme change.

Tweaks can be made to the scheme, but major changes will be akin to fighting out of quick sand-it will only make things worse.
Tackle the man with the ball. All better!

We would have been up 21, but a holding penalty took 7 off the board. Then we stalled and they scored to make it 7. But given how we have performed at winning time, the doom and gloom is somewhat justified.

The three man line has been awful. Moving up a LB to make it a four man line has worked a little better.
Would 4 DL would be considered changing horses in the middle of a stream?

Should be, could be, might be…..but aren’t.
........but arent?..... literally just proved facts the team isnt terrible. And you come up with the should be would be BS....stats/numbers dont lie. No were not terrible. I dont think you half supporting fans realize we lost i think 7 starters from last year's defense. Maybe 8... am I mad we blew 2 games? Yup.... was i there last night supporting the team post game? Sure was. And each and EVERY player thanked us for supporting them and the majority told us to "get home safe" yeah that's a team ill support and get behind. They are playing there asses off. Proven by the from behind tackle at the 1 yard line... where 99% of players would have given up cause it was a sure TD. Instead a hustle play stops them at the 1 yard line and eats up valuable clock.

Did you just compare UConn football to UConn basketball in terms of winning and expectations from fans?
Yeah I definitely did.... do you not remember the FiRe DaN HuRlEy fans? Come on you couldnt forget that. It was all over the yard. Soooooo many uconn football fans thought we would have 1 or 2 losses this year.....they never looked at the amount of starters on d we were losing..sorry im a ride or die blue blood uconn sports fan. Not just a supporter when uconn athletics are winning. Ill be at the rent 11/8 and 11/15 no matter our record... will you?

I share everyone's concerns about the D, but for now I'll look at it this way. Ball State is probably not a bottom 10 team. Their 2 blowout losses came against P2 teams. Syracuse just beat Clemson on the road, and Delaware thumped our future opponent FIU by 22, also on the road. So overall. I think our competition to date has been better than their ratings would suggest. Plus, as was pointed out, we are still down a couple of key players on D. I believe Brock is a good DC and that we will see improvement going foward. That is how I'll look at our situation.....for now.

How is it that Delaware has better players and possibly a better staff than us? How is this possible?

Have you ever lost a game/match/meet and tried to tell your coach not to tell you the truth? That’s not the business they are in. Competitors compete and players make plays. Our kids have been in position to do just that, and they came up short twice. No one said they are not working or playing hard, they haven’t come up big in big moments. Maybe they will as the season goes on.

-> “I’m in (the locker room) and I’m talking to the players, we just won a game and everyone’s excited and I could hear the defensive guys. They were pissed,” Mora said. “They were pissed and they were embarrassed by that last play, where they just got bullied into the end zone. They got bullied into the end zone, there’s no other way of saying it. And we all take that very personally, starting with me and (defensive coordinator Matt Brock) and every coach and every player. At least they take it personal. If they didn’t take it personal, it’d be a real difficult time getting it fixed.” <-

-> UConn had to replace nine starters from a defense filled with veterans and long-time Huskies this offseason. They brought in talent, a number of older, experienced players, and didn’t anticipate there being a significant drop-off from last year’s nine-win team…

… “It’s really bothersome. It is. I thought that we’d play better on defense at this point in the season,” Mora said. “Thought there might be some growing pains as we assembled nine new starters, but I didn’t think that it would be like this, especially at critical moments. I think what’s really disappointing for me is that we work so hard on our two-minute stuff. So maybe we’re not doing the right things as a coaching staff, so we have to look at that. And I’m not second-guessing Matt, I’m saying us as a coaching staff, me – am I doing the right thing in our two-minute drills, putting our defense in the right situations to learn so they can go out there on Saturdays and perform the way they should perform? But it’s very disappointing.” <-

Buffet110 read Mora from CT Isider
Sounds like he was honest, and more importantly, the kids were honest with themselves. Nobody’s getting thrown under the bus there’s just an acknowledgment that we’ve got to do better. No wine before it’s time, but sure hope we can open that bottle soon!

Mora really does say the right things…let’s hope this leads to better play on the field.

Jim Mora can’t be right. I was told the defense was actually good and that they just got tired.

This is crazy. Get a win. Team has some issues on defense and can get better. Should be 4-0, but 4-0 or 2-2, destination is same place. I would shoot for 9-3 as an expectation. They end up there, we happy?
No. The loss to Delaware was embarrassing. Barely beating a bottom 25 Ball State team was too. We’re playing for a spot in the P4 not an invite to the QuickRate bowl. 10 win seasons with consistent wins over bottom and mid tier P4 opponents should be the goal.

According to the pregame show with Bob Joyce Ball St had 2 starters on D out. I thought we should have been able to lean on them but our running game lacks consistency. Feast or famine. Too many 3rd and longs. Watching the game live you could see on the big board how Ball St had as many or more offensive yards as we did. They kept driving just like Delaware. In the second half the off tackle runs by Ball St on both sides of our D were so wide open. Huge lanes for the running back to go through. We were not able to figure this out ingame so better hope practice will help. Our D-lineman seem to be getting beat up ingame. Wind up down and shaken up. Not enough worthy subs to get them a break and getting beat on with 3vs5? Got the win but it seems that this week is a must win to have a decent season and not wind up at .500.

ULL is better than us and we play them on the road. Their annoying option offense will torture our beleaguered DL.
UL is 1-3. They were decimated by Mizzou, and just lost to a previously winless Eastern Michigan team (they had already lost their FCS game.) I know in recent years they have had some success, and most years since Big East football has ceased to exist they have been a better program than us. But I wouldn't say they're better than us this year. They look pretty bad.

I was actually on an AAC board chatting with a Rice fan yesterday, he seemed pretty confident in their team as well which is why I asked what makes you think they will thump us. Figured maybe I'm missing something, I just don't see what makes anyone think they're that good this year. Sure they're 3-1, but they've had a cakewalk of a schedule so far. They haven't dominated anybody, but were dominated by UH. Just looking at the results so far, Cuse and Delaware seem to be better teams than anyone they've faced outside of UH, who they couldn't remotely compete with. I think they finish at or below .500 based on their remaining schedule, which is kind of what I've come to expect from them over the years.

I agree they present a bit of a matchup problem for us, and that home field advantage will be big for them. But their defense will not lock down our offense, we will score points. Again, I think of this one as a tossup. I'll be shocked if either team blows the other one out

We don't have the DL depth.
DL depth is a secondary concern given the lack of bonafide talent among the starters. Only Parham has distinguished himself as the single stud on the whole defense. We have to pray the offense can control the ball and keep the defense off the field to the maximum extent possible if we have any hope of going to go to a bowl.

if our season goes off the rails and we finish 3-9 or worse, 2-10, and never see another victory sunday this year, it will have been due to defensive line play. of course JM will never say so, as he shouldn't, but we'll know it's because that DL looks like a bunch of high schoolers out there, pushing mindlessly without a plan, then getting pancaked. I don't mean to sound harsh, but it is what I've seen so far , 1/4 into the season.

wonder if a starting DL has collectively looked THIS bad during RE2.0 tenure? 2018? I heard that year was a doozie in the worst way possible lol ..... i wasn't around before covid.

If that’s the plan we are in trouble. We are really not a ball control offense. We are a quick strike type. A runner who can go 60 yards any time he touches the ball and a wide out who can take it for 40 any time he gets the ball. If the defense n come around this will be a very good football team. If not, it will still win a few games. Maybe even one it shouldn’t.

I’m gathering that post-Syracuse, opponents have fully deconstructed our D and know how to effectively attack it. It’s clear we can’t stop the interior run. Our DBs are now required to over commit to run stop and this opens up the pass game. This smells like Crocker all over again.

As far as the D Line being this bad under RE2.0, not that I can recall. Our defenses were substantially worse overall (giving up 70+ points at times) but I feel like we always had at least 1 player on our D Line who could consistently apply pressure to the QB week after week. A guy like Travis Jones comes to mind.

Completely agree about the D Line looking like high schoolers. I chuckled when I saw someone else make the comment we are bouncing off O Linemen over and over like bowling balls. Like maybe try a spin? A swim move? Something other than a bull rush that clearly is NOT working? Lol

Would 4 DL would be considered changing horses in the middle of a stream?
Not necessarily... if you were running a de facto 4 man front by essentially walking up the rush linebacker. It'd resemble more of a 4-2-5; that said, I don't think that solves the bigger issue the team has had stopping the run. When Delaware was gashing the defense all too often the linebackers over penetrated and ended up running by the ball carrier, rather than filling their gap responsibility.

Despite the disappointment around this year's performance, the 2018 defense wishes they were this good.... the 2018 UConn defense was, quite literally, all time bad, not just for UConn but for FBS. (It set the record for both most points per game and most yards per game allowed)

After watching every game for years, I'm not sure how anyone wouldn't be happy with a win. I really don't care how it looked.

We almost and should have beat a Cuse team who just stomped Clemson at Clemson. Delaware also just beat FIU handidly. Yet, half this board think we suck and won't win another game. You guys clearly werent here back in 2018-2021. See ya guys when we make a bowl again.
