That seems like quite a leap to say Bard was not closer material. The guy was pretty solid most of the year and nobody debates his stuff. I think the Sox will miss Papelbon a lot but you could do a lot worse than having Bard as a closer. I actually think it's a gamble to try to to stretch him out as a starter and am not all that optimistic that it will work out well.
If it was clear he was good enough to be the closer, he would have been the closer and they would have added a starter. He can bring it, but it's straight and it sure looked to me that he got figured out.
