Back to Back Georgia State Champion Colben Landrew

Went off in the state championship game.

Wheeler's five-star senior, Colben Landrew, had the kind of performance you would expect, with a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds“ ..Colben Landrew was rightly awarded the game's MVP, and he agreed with his Coach's assessment of his teammates.

Colben Landrew

"Coming out here, playing with my brothers, we were mentally ready to go," he said. "Every day at practice, we go really hard, so during the game, it's kind of mentally easy for us. We have trust in Coach, and we know we're gonna be all right.”

Landrew's performance in the final capped a season where he was named the Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Player of the year and the MaxPreps Georgia Player of the Year.

Overall Season Averages:
24.9 points
6.8 rebounds
3.2 assists per game.
per MaxPreps.com

Could Colben Landrew be Steph Castle level impactful next season?

22pts in this state semi final game. Lots of emphatic highlights.

I'm only about 5 minutes in and plan to finish watching later (thanks for uploading) but does anyone know who #2 is on Landrew's team? He made some plays and seems to move like a D1 hooper. I'm assuming he has some offers

4* kevin savage. Ranked around 40 in 2027. Offers from Cinci, Alabama, Purdue, etc. We won't recruit him. Too small for our system.

FWIW they also have a Clemson and Ole Miss commit on the roster. Some other lower level D1 guys too. It's a ridiculously talented public HS.

I've taken some notes on his game over the last season.

He's going to be a freshman but the toughness on rebounding and physicality getting to the rim are going to be where he can make his mark. 6'6 235 with hops and length isn't something we've had in a while. He draws a ridiculous amount of fouls and seems to make them at an 85% clip or so. Will be a nice change of pace at the 3 when (Hopefully) Braylon is back and gives us some minutes there. Could see some spot minutes at the 4 when we need him as well.

Otherwise he does a little bit of everything but isn't necessarily elite. Passes okay, handles it well enough to bring it up after a board.

Shot 38% in the 12 full games I watched from deep, and a gorgeous 61% from 2. D1 is a very different game but the potential to be a real contributor is there.

Question like with all kids will be defense. We don't play an easy defense and they get away with a lot of crap in high school. If he plays defense, he'll earn his minutes.

We're definitely getting a backup 5 in the portal, but I will be very curious if the staff goes after a backup 4 now that Stew is gone, or if the backup 5 they get is more of a 4/5 combo backup.

OR if they plan to use Landrew as the backup 4.

I am guessing he’s an inch or two smaller- but tell me Colben doesn’t remind you of Caron Butler.

I see some of you are saying Stephon Castle.

Colben’s body type- baseline game is totally ala Caron Butler- he also wears the same # jersey- #3- lol. Think UConn is getting a gem in this kid- let’s goooo!!!

I thought he was a 4 star? Did he gain a star after committing to us? Like Castle?

Kid looks great, I hope he can defend and get floor time. Our roster is stacked but he has the physical strength to be valuable. He’ll be in the second wave I hope.

A lot of talk in multiple threads about Colben Landrew being a power forward for us. He's a shooting guard/wing.

Can he really play the 4 in high level D1 as a 6’6” freshman?

Seems like we have a lot of guys that are more natural 3s. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Wheeler listed him at 215 lbs on MaxPreps, but 247 has him at 235. GHSA (his conference) posted he was 225 in his player of the year post. Being 235 vs. 215 would be the difference between being a pretty pure 3 and someone who can play the 4.

He's a thick kid, strong base. I watched a bit of the Jordan Classic with him out there and him and Stokes were the two players that looked like men.

With Dan in charge, the closest we've ever had to what many now want at the four was The Wrench. We also had a couple seasons where while being labeled a guard, Tyrese Martin was basically a de facto four for the bulk of his time on the court here.

I'm not sure who specifically it is that our staff is targeting to fill out the remainder of the roster, but I'll wager heavily if one has a Karl Malone body, Danny views him as a five, not a four.
