Azzi and Sarah put the Student in Student-Athlete as both were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic AA 1st team along with Raegan Beers, Mikayla Blakes and Olivia Miles. Azzi was also named by the CSC as the Academic All-American Team Member of the Year

As information, Azzi and Sarah are the 10th and 11th UConn WBB Academic AA’s joining:

1. Leigh Curl - 1st team (twice)
2. Wendy Davis - 2nd team
3. Rebecca - 1st team (twice)

5. Ann Strother - 3rd team
6. Maya - 1st team (3 times) 🤩

I must confess that I had never heard of Leigh Curl before as she predated Geno at UConn, graduating in 1985, the year before Geno showed up in Storrs. So I looked her up and she is one impressive individual.

In addition to her basketball prowess, she graduated Summa Cum Laude as the Valedictorian of her class. Subsequently, she earned a medical degree at Johns Hopkins and became an orthopedic surgeon. Leigh Curl made history as the first female team doctor in the NFL, assuming that role with the Baltimore Ravens.

Do the rules require a minimum number of minutes played? I remember Blanca earning a 4.0 but acknowledgement by the CSC? I guess her play was not good enough.

I don’t know about minutes played. But clearly, all the players included on the Academic AA team are star players with their respective teams, when you consider that the other players named to the 1st team besides Azzi and Sarah included Beers, Blakes and Miles. So it is some combination of exceptional basketball performance and exceptional academic performance.

Azzi was always characterized as smart when she finished her 4 year course in 3 years and took undergraduate courses ti get a Masters.. Sarah is so exceptional that this award did not surprise me. They are two beautiful females that besides being BB stars, They will succeed in what ever they choose to do. GO AZZI!!!! GO SARAH!!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!
