Well said. I always tell my high school players "Players that love the game, are in the gym over the summer break. Players that like the game, are at the beach hanging out with their friends." We, as coaches, know who is serious about their craft and who isn't just based on the amount of work they put in over the summer. At this time of year if a kid wants to be really good, this is what they need to be doing. Take a week or two and get some intense, individual work in with the good skills trainers and make a jump. Especially the bigs. If they want to separate themselves and claim the PT, get out there and find whoever the Post Whisperers are. Bueckers and Fudd can tell them where the best trainers are. Use a little of that NIL money and make the investment.
My equivalent line is "the biggest indicator of success isn't how hard you play during the game, or even how hard you work during practice, it's how hard you work out on your own. Great players put the time in not because they have to, but because they want to."Well said. I always tell my high school players "Players that love the game, are in the gym over the summer break. Watching these clips of Azzi and a host of other D1 and D2 players working on their game over the summer, is so inspiring. Now if the mental side of the game is as sharp as her physical side of the game, oh it is going to be on and popping!! Play without Fear!
I agree, I don’t know what more it would take. It would really piss me off and motivate me if my coach had to bring in a transfer because he needed consistent production from my position. If my goal was the majority of the PT and eventually even a pro career, I would already know what is necessary. I realize that not all of these kids have the athleticism or natural talent to get much better than they are but they owe it to themselves to leave no stone unturned to find out, if they have those goals.Well said. Kobe would sometimes make me a little crazy, but he was the poster boy for putting in the work. I suspect that is what first attracted him to the Huskies. My equivalent line is "the biggest indicator of success isn't how hard you play during the game, or even how hard you work during practice, it's how hard you work out on your own. It's only a foul if the offensive player extends an arm or hand. Using the body/shoulder to come off the defender to create space is not called.Odd that they are teaching a push off move.
20 minutes of drills for those needing an Azzi fix.
My daughter, through AAU and summer league, played close to 100 games every summer. The day she got her drivers license was one of the happiest days of my life.Well said. No push off as she was not extending her arm. Instead, she used her arm as a brace to absorb the contact and allow her more freedom of movement. That's why her arm was always bent at the elbow rather than straightened.Odd that they are teaching a push off move.
We could very well see Azzi becoming in her own way much like Paige was lauded by Geno and others as "the most unstoppable and most difficult player to defend in college basketball" (or words to that effect). She is obviously determined that in her last year at UConn she would like a NC repeat and is getting herself ready to bring it all on the floor. There is no doubt her energy and skills will definitely rub off on all the Huskies. She is working on skills which will give her a tiny edge over her defender. As she showed in both games of the final four, she only needs the tiniest of margins in time or space to be effective. You must always respect her abilities on the perimeter, but now she is learning subtle ways unguardable player in Di. to get enough room to score anywhere on the floor. Hope it rubs off in some small way on her fellow Huskies!
Truer words were never spoke! She wants that second ring for bragging rights over Paige. She'll be able to point to that second ring until the end of time.We could very well see Azzi becoming in her own way much like Paige was lauded by Geno and others as "the most unstoppable and most difficult player to defend in college basketball" (or words to that effect). But seriously, she may want to have a season in which she is clearly the leader, the one who carries the team the way Paige did the last two seasons. Geno asked her if she'd accomplished all she'd wanted to do in a UConn uniform and she said no. I suspect what she wants is to do what Geno had set her up for in that sophomore year: a shot at AA, NPOY, and a second NC. And to do it all as the obvious leader, the bucket-getter, the one they all look to when the game is on the line.
