Azzi on the Wall of Honor!

My local girl was named a 1st Team All-American by the USBWA (Basketball Writers). She was chosen along with Sarah, Betts, Blakes, and Hidalgo.
Thank you MilfordHusky for alerting us to your local girl all those years ago. What year do you think it was when you first told us about Azzi? Well, she has lived up to the hype and I think we’re all delighted to have watched her overcome all the adversity to become a Husky of Honor.
Well done Azzi and Milford!

Well done Azzi and Milford!

Thanks. I saw Azzi a few times in her freshman year, I think 2018.

An inside source claimed Geno said that Paige and Azzi could have given us 15 good minutes when they were HS sophomores. They were both well beyond their years.

My count of teams with 3 selection in a single year: Tennessee 1, Oregon 1, UConn 6.
Interesting reading. I am trying to remember some of those teams with 3 AA.

I remember those late 90's Tennessee teams... I remember thinking how awesome they were...

But I am thinking about who was the best Uconn threesome... Tina/Renee/Maya? That would be my vote.

For the record Maya was my favorite Husky of all time.

Every March and April the same topic arises: Huskies of Honor criteria.
Some say it is being named to the 10-member WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) All-America first team.
Graduating from UConn.
Others say being named to the USBWA AA first team (like this thread)?
Anyone know which AA team it really is?
you didnt get the answer last March or April?

See post #13. UConn is the only team with multiple first-teamers in the same season.
Not true. Oregon had Hebard and Ionescu on the AP and the USBWA 1st team back in 19-20 season. 1st team 5 member teams.

Yup, that's why I asked again this year. 😖
Plus seeing that no one has disputed the thread, I have to believe that the USBWA (Basketball Writers Association) meets the criteria.

Maggie Vanoni says there are 3 instances of multiple teammates on the AP 1st team. Who else did I miss?

Every time I see the AP list, I can’t believe Swin Cash was not a first team pick. The leading scorer and rebounder for the undefeated team smh. There wasn’t another forward in America better than her that year! Fortunately she was named a WBCA All-American.

Maya was truly one of a kind.

2010 - Charles, Moore
2012 - Griner, Sims (Baylor)
2016 - Jefferson, Stewart
2017 - Collier, KLS
2019- Hebard, Ionescu (Oregon)
2026 - Fudd, Strong

We are both missing the 10th. Is 1994-5 the appropriate starting year?

Good. To me this is one of the main reasons Azzi needed to return for this season.
And fortunate that it all worked out...with still some more goals to go.

I like Latson, but her numbers have definitely taken a hit.
Latson, Johnson, Johnson, Okot, Edwards

vs Latson,?,?,?,?.

SC has a pretty formidable, balanced lineup. I'd guess Latson still happy about her choice.

Look at Maya with 4 times AA...

I am surprised Stewart was only 3 times..

Back to who was better Maya or Stewart lol.
Stewie wasn't great as a freshman... Hartley, Dolson and KML were still there I believe

Yeah, Stewie set the freshman record for the most points in the first 10 games, then hit a bit of a slump, as teams got physical with her. She had 0 points against Baylor. After sitting out the first NCAA game with a minor injury, she really turned it on for the next 5 games--plus 3 years.

Stewie wasn’t great as a freshman??? I beg to differ. She scored 20+ points in 3 of her first 4 games, averaging 14 ppg, 6 rb & 2 blocks for the season while earning MOP for the NCAA Championship tournament.
The postseason doesn't matter in this conversation. The final numbers are good but she had a stretch of games in the season where she just wasn't playing good basketball which ruined her All American chances.

That’s a pretty arbitrary determination and makes absolutely no sense that the evaluation of Stewie’s freshman season should not include the most important 6 games of the season. Beyond that, she made the all freshman team in the BE, prior to the tournament and at a time when the BE was the strongest conference in WBB.

While Stewie would certainly get even better during her next 3 seasons at UConn, any suggestion that she was not that good as a freshman is absurd.
