With all the attention and respect Azzi has to date, this award is miniscule in comparison.

Her accomplishments to date are impressive for an athlete her age. Looking forward to seeing her play for UCONN next season.

Two games. IMO Azi should not have qualified as a finalist.

she is a GREAT prospect. May prove to be “generational” but she had no senior year.
Respect but disagree with this opinion. Azzi is a former winner of this award. There has never been a criteria for number of games played for the award nor should there be. The only criteria is the best Prep player. It doesn't take an educated voter more than a game to determine who the best prep player is especially when you are talking about a "generational" talent who you have probably seen before. In reality (normal year) these voters were not going to be watching EVERY game Raven or Azzi played in anyway. I think you are falling into the same trap as some of the UCONN fans by saying Raven won this award because she played in more games than Azzi.

Azzi won the Gatorade NPOY in 2019, not the Naismith. Haley Jones won this one her senior year.

The award is for the best high school player THIS SEASON. Two games is simply not enough to adjudge a player as being the best for a season. Would ten be enough? Maybe but two is clearly insufficient to establish a season.

Azzi has been unanimously proclaimed the best prospect. Raven has been chosen the best high school player THIS SEASON.

What makes 2 clearly insufficient and 10 not?

IMO, why not just congratulate the young lady who won the award? I swear, Bueckers and Fudd show tons more maturity and perspective than so many adults here who complain or find fault with everything non-Uconn. There are other great players and deserving recipients of awards besides those in or to be in a Uconn uniform.

Azzi will be great for UConn, especially with the talent we have and the talent coming in next year: Azzi, Caroline Ducharme, Amari DeBerry and Saylor is already here.
I still crack up thinking about Geno saying: "I looked up, and we had 4 freshmen and high school kid out there"!

Agreed. To further that, I doubt anyone complaining has watched a single minute of either Fudd or Johnson play HS basketball this season which is what the award is for.

Let's not make up alternate theories here and attempt to prop them up with assumptions! You are assuming that Azzi lost this award because she only play in two games. Could it be this simple: Raven played better in 19 games than Azzi played in her two Games? or Azzi played well enough in two games to be considered a finalist but not well enough to win the award?
I doubt it. I’m willing to bet she did not qualify because of the number of games. Do I know that for a fact? No. But you don’t know for a fact that your version of events is right either. It’s just my opinion of what is the most likely chain of events. I fully agree that two games is not enough, regardless of how she played. I simply think they should not have included her if she never had a chance to win. They should have announced a minimum number of games to qualify. It’s not like this is a new award. It’s even possible they had such a rule but there again, if they did, they didn’t do a good job of making sure people knew about it. Again, I know they don’t have to do that either but imo it would be better (for them too) if they made sure that the requirements were widely disseminated so the fans of players on the list could know if their player had no chance to win.

What is your basis for concluding that "she never had a chance to win" or is that just another opinion?

Considering this entire year has been a disaster with covid, altered seasons, constantly changing laws, etc. I'm pretty sure outlining the POY voting criteria for the sake of fans getting their hopes up is justifiably of zero importance to Naismith.

Ten being 5 times more is “maybe -
Two is less than 10% of a normal season.
Ten is close to half a season.

not saying ten would definitely be sufficient this year it “may” be. It is all, of course, opinion anyway- even when choosing the “best” of two players who play an equal number of games.

please don’t think I am saying that Raven is better than Azzi. I’m just saying that two games just doesn’t qualify for having the best season

First this is great "bulletin board" motivation for Azzi. Second think for a moment what the criticism would have been if they did give it to Azzi. If that happened some would say she got it based on reputation, not as the best "player" this year. It is not who do you think the best prospect is, who would you most rather have next year, who will have the biggest impact for the rest of their career.

No it was for best "player" for this season. So I have no problem with this award, but agree with others, that if you are officially or unofficially disqualified for not really having a season, Azzi should not have been listed as a candidate at all, perhaps citing that criteria at the nomination stage, not when the winner is announced.

Totally agree! If the amount of games was an issue, they should simply have announced that and put out a statement that “regretfully, any player with less than a given number of games will not be considered.” This is simply a farce! They wanted the appearance that she (the number one player) was in the competition while in reality she never had a chance. Look, I don’t have a problem with them eliminating her for that reason but they should not have included her in the final list! What a travesty!

Not even remotely a travesty!

It really doesn't even qualify for any season at all. Not even a decent warm up, sneeze and you miss it.

Coaches in general will have problems with balancing playing time next year for those incoming and those who decide to take advantage of another year within their respective programs. Both South Carolina and UCONN, in particular, will have challenges given the quality of the current rosters, the incoming freshman class and those who choose to stay on for 2021-22. Will be interesting to see who falls out after next season.
Not a problem at all. Just substitute all 5 members on the courts after 5 min, fresh legs , DePaul, Villanova used to do that

Actually, our bench has been disappointing this year. Lele is a senior but can play another year if she chooses. Amihere has been disappointing off the bench because she plays out of control.

I could see a couple of our freshmen getting significant time next year. Feagin as a big and Raven or Rivers at guard. We need better point guards play. Raven COULD play a role ass a freshman
Regarding Amihere, I am completely lost on the factual evidence of this assessment I confess.
