Ayanna Patterson potential National Freshman of the Year?

This seems most reasonable for a rotation player.

Me, too... or more precisely against Victaria Saxton. One key element of Boston's game is having Saxton play next to her, someone stronger than most 4s. Not so in this matchup, though.

I'm curious about this one. Will Barker start? She looks promising.

This is possible, though my guess is it will be undeserved if it happens. In the FIBA games, Betts was lumbering and slow, and mainly scored merely by being taller. When I compare her to Cardoso, I'm disappointed in what I see in Betts. Cardoso runs the floor well and has good around-the-rim skills. I was glad to see that Betts was more active in Stanford's exhibition game. But I can't see her starting, and is probably too slow to impress Tara, and unlikely to come off the bench before Prechdel.

Is Rice going to start at UCLA? I assume Osborne will be the starting pg. But Since Penn left, Rice could start at the 2, I suppose, if she beats out Jones. I like Rice's game, reminds me of Olivia Miles.
She started last night with 12 pts 7 Assists and played the most minutes 29 of any player in a UCLA uniform including osborne.

We’re about to have some scoring records shattered this year with that 130 per game average
Ain't it the truth!! I did not mean that they will score that many points every game. I meant the possibility of them scoring that many points at any given game individually ,not collectively. They are all capable of scoring that many points and more. GO HUSKIES!!!

I respect you, enjoy your posts, this is not a KNOCK on you or your abilities. As the Poster you are responding to, I don't have the inclination to search hundreds of post to validate a new comment---again, no insult, FACT. Your statement about Challenges seemed to say ---CARNAC knows something I don't know, or didn't see. So, being the spoil sport I am, I wondered what that could be.
Again, Assume away. You have experience and history to back up your assumptions., Go for it. I won't stop reading your interesting post over this, but honestly, I still wonder what are Ameri's Challenges that other players are not having (yes an assumption) that I missed. No insult, no nasty comment intended, just asking.
Thanks TCC. Here's JorgyG's comment on Amari that IMO is one of the best "detailed" observations on Amari posted yesterday at 9:27am. I can't argue or debate Amari's play or skill set. I've never seen her play in person. I've only seen her in very limited play, and that was through a camera lens. There are a lot of things that happen on the floor that the camera does not pick up.

I would need to see her in person to make my own evaluation. But what I think does not matter. What Geno thinks does. I'll go with whatever he decides. I'm just a committed fan from far far away that enjoys watching this team, and wants to see this team win as many games as possible, and very soon, another NC.

JordyG: "To me clearly Amari is a disappointment for 4 glaring reasons. 1) How and when Geno uses her in the offense, 2) Her effectiveness in that offense, 3) Her effectiveness on defense, particularly the defensive glass, 4) Head down hustle down court.

Once again Geno brought her in for what is essentially garbage time. This time against a smallish D2 team. On offense Geno never used her on the block. In fact, whenever Geno brings her in the game, as last year, he limits the type of offense run. In an almost (almost) wheel type offense Geno would use his pistol offense to get Amari up top and place Ayanna on the block.

This was to use Amari's passing and shooting skills. Amari though is the biggest person on the floor, and it seems Geno still doesn't trust her skills on the low block. Just as last year when he'd place Amari up top and Piath down low. It was my hope that Amari would finally learn how to use her girth and strength, at least against smaller opponents, but that doesn't seem to be the case. We still don't know if Amari has a decent drop step off either shoulder.

Amari did make some nice passes, as last year from the elbow yesterday. Amari also missed her only shot attempt from just outside the elbow. She has yet to show if she can back an opponent down from the foul line and put the ball on the rim consistently. She has yet to show she can roll with authority to the hoop and finish. She has yet to show she can mount effective screens. She has yet to show how she deals with weak side help. She has yet to show if she can move the ball effectively out of the slot. She has yet to show how she handle a hard pocket pass. She has yet to show how she handles passes in the lane in transition.

On defense she again showed little ability to use her body effectively to box out and get rebounds, and she hasn't shown even a passing ability to read the ball off the rim. She has yet to show whether she can body an opponent up and deny them their spot. She has yet to show if she can use her body to move someone off their spot. She has yet to show if she can be an effective shot blocker. She has yet to show how she handles switches off her mark.

Four is self explanatory.

For someone with so many evident skills Amari has shown little evidence of using them. I was very hopeful that Amari would make a sophomore leap this year, and I still am. Amari needs to assert herself in all aspects on the floor. I have some long standing theories about and her doghouse residency that I won't say here. Nevertheless Amari is still real young, and it's a long season. Sooner rather than later her contributions will be necessary and hopefully she'll step to the table and really dig in."

Ayanna reminded me of a young Kalana Greene. Not great size, but a lot of fight underneath. Talented for sure. IF ONLY she could be teamed up with Ice!!!! Heartbreaking....
Not great size?? She is 6'2" (KG was only 5'10") and did you see her base? Her legs are not skinny and she is strong. I imagine she is closer to 200lbs, probably 180-190lbs. There is great size for her height. She will not be pushed around in the paint too much.

I just wanna see Ayanna Patterson play against SC's Aliyah Boston!
With all due respect one can only hope you do not get your wish. Boston is a 6'5" eleven time POY senior in multiple categories. Patterson a 6'2" freshman would be subject to that abuse at lesser programs but we have Edwards and Juhasz as obvious match ups.
Match up two months out, we shall see. Geno will make the decision for sure. ;)

Carnac, a darn good post! Hope improvement is coming. It doesn't look good.......
Too early to tell. Let's wait until they come back from their Phil Knight showcase in Oregon. We'll have a better sample size of 5 games including two on the road against good teams to critique. The exhibition game and this next one won't really tell us anything.

I judge a team by how they play against a team that's as big, fast, and talented as they are. Texas, NC State, and Oregon St/Iowa will be excellent barometers. If UConn comes back from Oregon still undefeated, then I will really be impressed. They played well against a team they were supposed to look good against. How they handle Texas will be the litmus test.

Mike Voepel seems to think so. Philippou and Creme picked Kiki Rice from UCLA which is a really solid pick IMO.
Below are many of the college freshmen and the results of their efforts in their first games. The first grouping is sorted by minutes played. The second is sorted by team name. Some teams have 2 or 3 freshmen with decent to really good first games. I highlighted Patterson for comparison.

Thanks for reminding me that Raven Johnson is technically a "redshirt freshman" though some on here hate the phrase. Our two true frosh got significant minutes against our cupcake appetizer. I don't expect to see much of them Thursday night against Maryland on the road.

And especially, thank you for your work in putting this spreadsheet together. Would be fun to see it once per week - or month - but no Janiah Barker?

Texas A&M hasn't played yet and their site doesn't list an exhibition result.
The chart above is interesting but Ayanna's & exhibition stats of others wouldn't count.

Nor do Patterson's but her's are given. But okay, I see your point since she is the topic of the thread.

She needs to get over her bunny allergies first.
I notice the same thing during YANNA's 3X3 time with Team USA U18. But, I'm
confident Jamelle and the other coaches are on it as we speak. GO YANNA! Keep it
up! ( note: if you are being tripled team....some one on the perimeter is free!!! Look
for Azzi, Lou Lopez, Caroline...... everybody eats!!)

Watching the game in person, I didn't notice Ayanna missing any bunnies. I certainly did notice that she was trying to do putbacks against multiple defenders (and missing them) when she should have been looking for an open player to pass to.

If she is 1-on-1 under the basket after getting an offensive rebound, I think she will be able to finish a putback against nearly all defenders (with a few exceptions). But even against Kutztown, 1-on-2 or 1-on-3 is not the best play for her to make.
