You never want to be the guy who comes after The Guy. Except in UConn's case, where even that guy wins a national title
Maybe, but so much about the game has changed. If GMac can coach (looks like he can) and knows the ins and outs of selling Syracuse (which I'm sure he does), he may not be a bad call. This should be fun to watch. A vocal minority on their board is pushing for GMac.
The equivalent for us would be if Kemba Walker coached Fairfield to the NCAAT in 2018 when Ollie was fired
Not really. It would be if Kemba was an assistant for years at UConn went to Fairfield and took a four win team dancing in 2 years. Not sure if Gmac is the answer but he certainly is making it compelling. This should be fun to watch. A vocal minority on their board is pushing for GMac.

I was going for the whole "beloved player who led the team on a postseason run" angle. Obviously there's no 1:1.Not really. I think Dougherty had early success at NC.You never want to be the guy who comes after The Guy. Except in UConn's case, where even that guy wins a national title
I saw on the Syracuse board that Luke Murray is a coach SU is considering. I am not sure if they reached out yet. Question for those in the know, is he a great recruiter, can he motivate and develop players? I understand he built UCONN offense but he works under Hurley who seems to be the great motivator. Can Luke do all of the other parts of a head coaching job or is he best served as an asset like Chris Daley?
ARe they really insane enough to believe Wright, Stevens or Donovan would go there? Maybe if they paid 50M/year, but short of that....This will be an interesting one. On one hand, they name dropped Jay Wright, Brad Stevens, Donovan, etc. at one point. But then you have a guy like GMac who would be a legit hire on multiple levels. He took over a team that was 4-28, and in two years, Siena is an NCAA team. I couldn't stand him as a player, but I bet he could be a good coach. Question will be if Syracuse wants to go the former player route again and risk things not going well. I also read that Mike Hopkins may, 289 years later, actually fulfill the whole "coach-in-waiting" thing.
I think Luke would be a great hire, and even though I wouldn't want him to leave, a place like Syracuse would be a potentially great landing spot.
He followed Bill Guthridge who replaced Dean Smith.I think Dougherty had early success at NC.
For all its flaws, if we’re being serious Syracuse would be a great first job for Luke. Or, frankly, for any coach. There is no way to tell. He's never been a head coach. If this were ten years ago, a program like Cuse should not consider him. Now, they have fallen pretty far from being a powerhouse and it would be a good starter job for him.
Kidding aside, he is in an awkward situation where he gets paid well and has a high enough profile to be picky. However, he really doesn't have any full experience as a head coach and teams with high expectations and deep pockets are always going to think they can get someone "more proven"
To keep hem average?Kim English or even Ed Cooley would fit in nicely at Syracuse.

And Guthridge went to 2 Final Fours in 3 years before retiring. He followed Bill Guthridge who replaced Dean Smith.
