26(!) turnovers for Australia vs. 9 for Serbia.

Australia shot 47% to Serbia's 37% and outrebounded them 46-34 and still lost.

That's some interesting stats. A 26-9 deficit in turnovers will certainly negate a 46-34 rebounding edge. Also, the teams tied on offensive boards, so the rebounding differential is almost entirely explained by the fact that Serbia took (and missed) more shots. Also, Serbia was +7 on points from the free throw line.

No not rhetorical. I don't follow closely enough to know if Canada has a shot against France, if it's a tossup, or if they could be favored.

If France had Dumerc I'd have them as a significant favorite over Canada. With Dumerc injured, though, it's pretty even.

Spain squeaks out a come from behind two point win against Turkey
My friend in Istanbul was distraught. Turkey had an 8-point lead and gave it away. They gagged over the last 2 minutes, lost the lead, and tied the game up. Then Anna Cruz hit the game winner at the buzzer.

Penny Taylor with 2 points, although she did have 9 assists. I wonder how the Aussie loss (Penny's loss) will affect DT.

Crazy stuff happens in knockout rounds. Geno has won NCAA tournaments and by ensuring sure his teams have stayed focused when the potential toughest opponents have lost. One need only go back at 2009, 2013, and 2016, to see what it's like playing with the path to a championship clearing up tremendously as a result of unexpected losses. Who is the international equivalent of Louisville and Syracuse?

Crazy stuff happens in knock-out tournaments just as it does in any single game - all it takes is a team who for 40 minutes shoots lights out or alternatively a great team having 40 minutes where they cannot get the ball in the basket. 2001 DT is a prime example, not sure she has ever shot so poorly in a single game before or since. Luckily for us USA and Uconn fans, 20 minutes of bad play or an opponents unconscious shooting is about as bad as it usually gets.
