For $2M, they could've done a lot better tha UNC-Ashville, Harvard and Utah, no?

That is a mistake. It is a $2 million purse that the teams will split. Each team gets a guarantee of about $150,000 and, based on how well you do, you get more. The winner will walk away with about $350,000.

Is it common for teams to earn more money if they win one of these regular season tournaments? So much for amateurism.

It's one thing to take home some cash that comes from the gate, TV and sponsorship money. In the case where you win and advance or go home, I can see you getting more money than the teams that bow out early. But in these regular season events where all the teams play the same amount of games but the winner gets a big pay day feels professional. I guess you could justify this a little bit if the TV money is bigger for the championship game, but then wouldn't both teams split that part of the pie.

Maybe it's a common practice for the winner to take home more money at these events but I've never before heard of it.

That's correct- the purse is $2 million, not each teams payout!

Another interesting factoid is that the Atlantis will convert a ballroom at the resort into a 4,000-seat basketball arena for the event.

Exactly how high is the ceiling in this ballroom? I'm envisioning a long pass taking out a chandelier or one of those spinning mirror balls. :)

See now it would be $2M each if the BCS consortium ran it....

My understanding is the ceiling is actually higher than that of the Lahaina Civic Center where the Maui Invitational is played.

Not doubting you in the least, as I've absolutely no idea myself, but how the hell do you come up with a factoid like this?

The ceiling in the casino at Atlantis is adequate for bball. Impressive place.

Not sure what the ceiling height is at either place but this pic makes it look like similar to Lahainia Civic Center.

2 Million each this field would be a lot tougher
