I was thinking about this during the game. I love that this team (as with most UConn teams) is so unselfish and passes the ball so well. I marvel at the number of assisted baskets they have.

But as I watched Mo Jeff get two offensive rebound putbacks I thought, "hey, those baskets don't have assists and really can't". And so I wondered to my self, "Self, I wonder how many of those they have".

A simple way is to subtract half the number of second chance points. Not perfect, but really, this team is big enough that rarely are they going to get an offensive rebound and not put it right back up.

So, for the Prairie View game, UConn had 25 assists on 32 made baskets and 12 second chance points. Meaning that for the most part, only 26 of those made baskets COULD have had an assist.

Leaving just ONE unassisted shot for the entire game. Nice.

Good thinking guys. The announcers should pick up on that the next game. It really is a remarkable stat when broken down.

So, Moriah, who happens to have the teams highest A/TO ratio, is the cause of almost half of the non-assisted baskets. Well, that is certainly something she is going to have to work on next year. If someone on the BY has Geno's ear, he should know about this. :):D

And then of course there are all those missed assists like MoJeffs's behind the back steal\pass that didn't turn into a basket because Stewie wimped out on the dunk and got fouled instead. There should be some kind of assist-for-FTs stat, or maybe just a beautiful-pass stat.
