Somebody explain to me the fouls in the last 30 sec. it got us nothing!!
If we had a 3 point lead ok
If they had the lead we had to foul to reach one and one ok
If Geno wanted to put them on the line and for us to take the last shot [crazy chance]
we still had to foul one more time to put them on the line
it just gave them more time to organize
why why why ???

My guess is, he wanted a steal and told his kids to go hard for it and take chances. If they fouled, there was no harm done.

Well pretty simple. A couple reasons. One we got to see what they were trying to run. (didn't help, but the idea was there). Also they would have to restart their offense a couple of times. We had not been guarding them very well. We could hold them for most of the shot clock, but eventually their offense was getting good looks. By only having to guard them for short periods at a time (as opposed to a whole shot clock), we should have had a better chance of making them take a bad or rushed shot.

Didn't work out that way, but that was probably the idea.

We had the (2) fouls to give without putting them on the line, or in the bonus. Tiff's foul at the 19 second mark forced St. John's to call their last TO to draw up a new play. Geno intentionally burnt clock and forced St. John's to exhaust their last TO. Bria then fouls at the 16 second mark and St. John's has no TOs left with which to reset a play. That means their gonna run the same play they called from the previous timeout and we bought ourselves a little window and look into what they had set up.

Running the clock down and forcing St.John's to burn all their TOs was smart money, because it gave them less time to set-up a quality play. Geno was looking to rush them into a low percentage shot and with Shenneika Smith shooting 4-14 for the night, she was probably the player we wanted taking the shot the most. She's hit a total of 4-3's all year, so the calculus was in our favor...the kid just rose to the occasion and drained the shot...that's the beauty of sport.

There had been some commentary that Tiff blew the assignment on Smith allowing her to get the wide open look, but we may have intentionally been over playing other shooters and couldn't rotate onto Smith fast enough. The fact that she took her shot with 8 seconds still left indicates that she did in fact rush her shot...she also just happened to make it...Scheisse! :(

I thought it was a good idea to use the fouls. It allowed the defense to set up and should have used up time and put more pressure on the shooter. It was unfortunate that Hartley fouled too quickly.

Yes. Leaving St. John's with over 14 seconds to shoot was a major error IMO. Not often I don't side with Geno but there's a first time for everything.

But the world still turns and I have grocery shopping to do:)

That's partly true. Tiff's foul at 19 seconds was good because it burnt St. John's last timeout. Bria's came just 3 seconds later. It would have been nice to have burnt several more seconds if possible...but the fog of battle and game circumstances don't always accommodate one's plans.

2 fouls to give is a big advantage. but we wasted them. we used them to get them to burn their timeouts which wasn't that big of a deal. as geno said, they ended up running the same play that they were running all game.

what you want to do is have them take time off the clock and use the fouls to make them start over. that and you can afford to be aggressive on defense. we did neither.

Good discussion. Geno provided his take on some of this in his post-game Q and A:

Question: "What was your defensive strategy on the last St. John’s possession?"

Geno's reply: “We made a mistake [committing] the second foul. I think Bria [Hartley] got a little over anxious. That’s not really when we wanted the foul to come. The very last possession was the same play that [St. John’s] been running the whole game. We had talked about switching screens. Kiah almost got [to the shooter] in time and [Shenneika Smith] makes her fourth three of the year.”

Nice to know Geno agrees with his Boneyard coaches!

I don't like the idea of a large center rushing out to try to block a shot beyond the 3 point line.

Why didn't we guard the 3-point line better? I'd almost let them get a 2 to tie the score and get us a shot in the last 10 seconds to win.

Watch the last 20 seconds of the game - in slo mo. A couple of interesting things happen - #24 screens Faris off the ball handler. IMO it was a moving screen but whatever it was, it was very effective and key. Faris was out of the play and the ball handler was open to pass the ball unimpeded.

Both Hayes and Stokes are in the paint facing the right wing. SJ #3 blocks them both. Hayes is stymied and out of the play. Stokes managed to get around the block and reacted quickly - but too late.

Maybe somebody with more basketball savvy can look at the play and determine if Hayes missed a defensive assignment or if she was just blocked from it. My unsavvy opinion is that it was great play by St John's.

Anyone criticizing Stokes for flashing out and attempting to block a 3 point shot needs to look at the play again.

The blame is not on Stokes.

It was blown coverage and that means what happened wasn't what should have been the coverage. On the other hand SJ is not a good 3 pt shooting team neither on Saturday or on the year. Just in the last 10 seconds.

To me the coaching staff broke the CARDINAL RULE of basketball! With a 2pt. lead under NO CIRCUMSTANCES don you allow a 3pt. shot on your home court in that situation. Everyone must be blanketed at the 3pt. line. If you give a 2pt. basket to tie the game , so be it. It's your home court, and you still have nothing worse than a tie. During the whole possession leading up to the basket , I'm yelling " NO THREES"! The coaching staff must make it perfectly clear to every player on the court!

Blown coverage my behind! There was noone even near the shooter. Before the ball is even inbounded every player near the 3pt. line must be defended. There was no defender on that side of the floor near the shooter!

And what is that other than blown coverage. When a D player fails to cover the proper O player it is a blown coverage. Tiff should have had the perimeter player instead she was in the post where Kiah was. She was not screened she was guarding the post player note she was using an arm bar. That is not something the is normal when one is picked on a screen.

EXACTLY RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! Geno screwed up period-the announcers said before the fifth foul that Geno had the defense packed in. Crazy, as I and everyone else knew that St J would take a three for the win. Just a bad mistake with that defense in this situation. You always go for the win on the road, esp. when you're a huge underdog.

According to Kim the play they drew up was NOT for a three. And I suppose you also knew that a girl was going to make her 4th three of the season for the win?
Come on - It happens. UCONN shouldn't have never let St Johns be close in the game. Once games are that close anything can happen. Busted play, bad call or somebody who hardly ever hits a 3 hitting one. That's sports for you.
