For as long as Geno Auriemma and Chris Dailey have been coaching the UConn women’s basketball team, statistics have always played a secondary role in determining a player’s value.
Points scored, margins of victory and even wins themselves are often less important than how the game is played, because ultimately, a player’s approach to maximizing how to get the most of her ability for the good of the team is what matters most.
“She is a starter on the No. 1 team in the country,” Dailey said. “Whatever we have asked Ash to do in the three years that she has been here, she is willing to do it and loves it. That is why she is playing the second-most minutes on the team. She never gets tired. She has a willingness to do whatever it is we ask her to do, whether it is offensive rebounding, defending, making shots.”
