.uconn is an elite program who for all intensive purposes underachieved this year..

Not sure why i felt the need to correct your usage of the phrase but I do. I guess i might be as big a as Gottlieb.

The correct phrase is "to all intents and purposes." This phrase dates back to the 1500s and originated in English law, where it was "to all intents, constructions, and purposes." In modern usage, "for all intents and purposes" is also acceptable. The phrase means "for all practical purposes" and is generally used to compare two nonidentical acts or deeds, i.e.,"We've got a few odd things to finish, but to all intents and purposes the job is done." "They redesigned the old model and created something which was to all intents and purposes a brand new car." A shorter equivalent phrase is "in effect."

When used in a strictly legal sense, the wording would be "intent and purposes," as it refers to one's mental attitude/state at the time said action occurred.

A common malapropism is "for all intense and purposes" (also, "for all intensive purposes") a result of the original phrase being misheard and repeated. The word "intense" is used here incorrectly; "intense" is used in English to indicate a degree of intensity, i.e., "As the afternoon passed, the fire grew more intense."

He also picked Davidson over Louisville, and was hard pressed to pick any Big East Team with any conviction.

After the conference's showing last year, can you blame him? (Or anybody?) That said, Gottlieb clearly has an axe to grind with the Big East and UConn in particular.

did gottlieb really pick iowa st.? smdh

The guy is a for sure and is the most hated guy at ESPN by his own co-workers but he isn't wrong picking Iowa State. If you look at their schedule, who they beat and by how much and compare it to UConn's schedule, they do indeed look like the better team. And an unbiased rating system says the same thing:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/bkt1112.htm

The teams are close enough for anything to happen but, yeah, Iowa State deserves to be the high seed and the favorite. The only reason why the line says otherwise is that stupid money is picking UConn. I certainly think our team can win this game but be honest about who looks to be the better team heading into the game.....

i agree with everything your saying its just amazing to me that he continually picks against us even if we are favored. he did it last year saying we`d get bounced in the first round. iowa state is a good team and has a good chance of winning the game but i believe on our best day we should be able to beat them on their best day.

well, the committee had us as the 34th best team in the country.........who cares what doug gotlieb thinks. i learned a while ago, the week is much better when you dont listen to these morons anyway. uconn is an elite program who for all intensive purposes underachieved this year. which means, we will be an easy target. get used to it if you arent already.

"intensive purposes"

I hope you didn't go to UConn.

Complaining that a 9 seed is in the tourney is laughable and an obvious shot at the program.

The fact that he is given this platform affects perceptions.

I stand by my original statement.
I agree. He is such a BCU homer. He hates the Big East and he hates us. As a "journalist" or "analyst" can't he at least pretrend to give the matchups some thought? ESPN should be kicking his ass for not trying to sell the Drummand/Davis matchup on Saturday night.

"intensive purposes" was a mistake guys. but seriuosly, get a freaking life. CAHUSKY, I do believe that the when you use "I" in the first person, it should always be capitalized. Just saying.

Why shouldn't it be? I mean, your initial point was a mistake. There was no real reason to correct you on the board other than it was his pet-peeve. But to double down on an even dumber mistake?

A mistake is a mistake is a mistake. Especially one, like capitalizing I, that you learn in kindergarden. This isn't a text message, nor is it a private message. If I didn't capitalize it, I would be a tad embarrassed.

Point: 1) No need to correct mistakes of other people on the board (although sometimes people represent themselves quite poorly when they write in all lower-case or all upper-case). 2) Mistakes are mistakes. Of course it should be always capitalized when that is the rule. The few exceptions come artistic liberty.

Well.... if it changes anything, Gottlieb tweeted this earlier today:

"Now that I am thinking more and more about it - Iowa State might get killed by UConn - but there isn't anything there to say they will show up"

Link

Personally, I preferred when he was picking against us....

lol, his followup isn't any better. he basically set it up to say that UConn should kill them, but if they lose it's because they didn't show up.

He just finished saying on his radio show that we don't deserve to even be in the tournament because of our conference record. Yes Doug, because you can find 37 at large teams around the country that are better than us...

Go steal more credit cards.

There should be no hard and fast rule like "You need to be at least .500 in your conference." There are all sorts of things that mitigate something like that. Specifically, not having your third leading scorer for 9 games, 3 of which were losses by >5 points, 2 in conference; or not having your HOF head coach for 11 games, during which you went 5-6.

12-4 with both.

The estrogen in this thread is unbelievable. They had a crappy season, ladies. What exactly did they do that should have all the pundits excited about their chances? Absolutely nothing. I could see them beating ISU comfortably and giving UK a game (and even beating them) and I could see them folding in the second half on thursday and losing by 15+. In fact, if i had to guess i'd put my money on that one. Just because some dude who gets paid to see those things can see the same thing doesnt mean he's got an axe to grind. I mean, jesus, Vitale said the other night that he thinks Duke might not make it past the first weekend. Why is no one talking about that?
