Actually, Coach Auriemma is a much better coach than Coach Wooden. I say this because Coach Auriemma has changed with the times. As the game and players change, he has adapted, changed, and succeeded accordingly. Coach Wooden, by the time he retired, was a dinosaur. No one is going to argue with his great window of success, but he could not have cared less about his players. Then again, it could have been the era from which he arose. But, can anyone imagine Coach Wooden trying to relate to and coach today's players? He had a hard enough time dealing with the 60's. And, his hands are not clean of scandal.

John Wooden could not have cared less about his players??? He was a devout Christian, reading the bible daily. Every interview I've ever seen with his former players, they absolutely loved him. Do you have specific info to back up this claim?

To say that he did not care may be an overstatement. But, unlike, say Coach Calhoun, who encouraged his players to stop by and visit with him every day, Coach Wooden was something of an island unto himself. His players may have respected him, but love? It was a different era, as well. There were the issues of race still dominant in a manner different than today and there was the whole counter culture thing. Adults and youth as a whole did not interact in the same way as today.

Find me a supporting quote attributable prior to 1985, and I will concede the argument.

Fact is, Bill Walton, very much the free spirit, and very much an independent thinker, did not see eye to eye with his coach during his playing days at UCLA: Especially off the court. Walton did not start speaking positively of Coach Wooden until he decided to resurrect himself, clean up his image, and look toward opportunities his fame afforded him.

Absolutely, Bill and John butted heads. Many of us butted heads against our parents and grandparents generations. In time most of us are changed by changes in responsibility and family. It may be that Bill needed to understand the world and the responsibilities of adulthood more than anything to do with coach.

Interesting. I have heard he was a selfish about his family time. And your above comment is much different than your original "general" comment. And I can't wait to read more about him. Because I have heard and read that every person he met daily he engaged the same way, from the custodians to the superstars.
