In The Globe today, BC (especially former AD Gene DeFillippo) gets lambasted for ineptitude in all sports except hockey. A comprehensive smackdown of every thing and everybody. We recall what a special favorite that DeFillippo was to UConn.

BC was harshly criticized for poor teams' performance (esp. football and basketball), lack of diversity at all levels, poor coaching, terrible management of athletic programs, dwindling attendance, fading donor support, poor morale, lousy facilities, and bad recruiting.

As if that wasn't enough, the most scathing criticism (UConn fans, take note!) was about the ill-considered decision to join the "southern" ACC.

Recognizing that the Boston Globe has always viewed WCBB as an oxymoron, it is no surprise that the article makes no mention of the success that the Boston College Women's Basketball Team had in the Big East and did not have after brother DeFellippo apparently forced Cathy Inglese to resign in 2008. Coach Inglese was a successful coach who recruited hard-nosed players. After she left, the team essentially disappeared and has become a doormat in the ACC. And her successors were white men who could neither recruit nor coach. The perfect combination for Father Leahy and his successive athletic directors.

I referred to the story when it appeared on line. One and the same story. I did not see it in print in March.

Could care less about BC...never a friendly neighbor to us. And so full of itself to the point of possessing a disturbing arrogance that (imho) contains more than a hint of latent old-school bigotry. Let 'em stew in their own juice.

As for UConn, no question that the AAC is a pretty bad fit and that we all hope it's just really temporary.

But is it in our long-term best interest to continue to focus on big-time football ? We like football but not in the same way they're fixated on it in the south and south-west.

What would be the long-term downside to backing away from big-time D1 FB and getting into a geographically sane conference that would permit the re-growth of real neighborhood rivalries and continued enthusiasm for the sports where UConn historically hasn't ever been inferior to anyone ? Basketball, soccer, field hockey, and baseball. And in sports that are full of demonstrated promise like men's and women's ice hockey.

If the tea leaves are correct, it seems like we aren't more than a respectable long-shot for getting invitations to any of the football-driven P5s. Is that so bad ? Isn't there another way to maintain UConn excellence without the insanity that big-time football presents with schools that are so far from our neck of the woods ?

Maybe it's time for a step back. Maybe the lure of the money should be scrutinized more carefully. Maybe there's another way.

so best UConn fit in Patriot League? Atlantic 10? Problem of course for WBB is lack of competition almost anywhere UConn goes (except perhaps ACC, Big 10 or Pac-12, none of which are particularly close geographically and we know Pac-12 completely an impossibility).
All this BC mess is so painful. Boston as a city deserves a college with better teams (especially since I anticipate relocating there from SF within the next year, and I've loved being able to go down to beautiful Palo Alto to see a variety of highly competitive teams in multiple sports)!
