Arkansas 63 vs Lamar 50 - Poffenbargar line

I watched. She is really good. Like plays a really good floor game. Can rebound then handle the ball in the halfcourt and pass. Her shooting is slowly coming around. She really plays like a big guard. She had some tough drives where she finished with power. I was really impressed with her and really the whole team when Ive watched them. Definitely a contender for like a top 4 seed. Meaning like top 15-20 team.

Say had a tough start to the season in terms of shooting. Her stats were about 30/20/50 early on, but they have improved lately. She’s leading the team in minutes and rebounds, while being 5th in scoring. I believe she was SEC FOW for 2 weeks in a row. Importantly, she’s healthy and happy. When I saw her in high school, I thought she was similar to Ducharme.

With Daniels out with an injury, Saylor has been their point guard. She’s a capable ball handler, though not very quick. She reminds me of the way Caroline moves on the court.

I watched a few Arkansas games at the start of the season. Saylor wasn't getting a lot of shots, but she was a beast of the boards. As the season progressed, Saylor has been out there feasting! I think she is finding her groove and playing well. Super happy for her.

0-11 the other night. Her shooting %s are not that good. Rebounding pretty good. Let’s see how she does against a little tougher competition in conference play.

Arkansas had a solid win at Creighton today, 83-75. Samara Spencer led the Razorbacks with 26, but Saylor Poffenbarger led the team with 11 rebounds, while also scoring 16 points. Not a great shooting game (6-16), but she and Spencer were in nearly the whole game in beating 16th rated Creighton.

To bad Saylor did not stay at UCONN. 17 points and 12 rebounds
Better question is how did UConns great coaching staff let her get away or maybe it was best for all concerned? There is no “to bad” about anything. It is what it is.

Perhaps you guys didn't see Saylor play for us in spring '21. She only got a few mop-up minutes and looked completely lost. She received plenty of encouragement from Paige and Evina to shoot whenever she got the ball. But she was young, and probably not feeling 100%.

The following fall, she was still recovering from an injury and didn't get to play at all. I imagine she figured she'd never crack the rotation. This may have been a huge miscalculation once Paige and Azzi went down. Of course, who knows what was going on in practices last spring. Perhaps she didn't think she'd beat out Caroline. But once Caroline's health declined, I suspect she'd have seen a lot of minutes, if she wanted them and was healthy enough herself.

I doubt the coaching staff made an easy mistake. The Saylor they knew probably wouldn't have started for us much this year, while they might have guessed she'd start at Arkansas. It wouldn't at all surprise me if Geno said as much to her at the time.

Saylor hadn't played any basketball in the better part of a year before she came to the UConn campus. You couldn't even play basketball outdoors in Maryland in 2020. She'd had hip labrum surgery in the spring, so wasn't able to play AAU in Virginia during the summer. Due to restrictions in Maryland rehab was difficult, too.

You can't judge her on winter-spring 2021.

Do we know that the coaching staff encouraged her to leave?

I agree. You absolutely couldn't judge her on the basis of that year, as the current year clearly shows.

And I didn't mean to suggest that the coaches had counseled her to transfer -- I have no evidence of this. I merely meant that it would have been a kindness to a young player trying to make a difficult decision to offer her some advice. Students come to me all the time with analogous questions -- not athletic ones, but academic ones -- and as a teacher, I feel it's my responsibility to give them honest advice.

Saylor was not suppose to be at UConn. She is where she’s supposed to be. All of the good/great players can’t come to UConn. She nor her parents were happy here. She moved on, now everyone is happy. Let’s be happy for her.
