Are we underestimating the Big East?

If I were to tier out the sport this year, this is how it would go:

Tier 1- power leagues:

1A: Big 12, Big Ten, SEC
1B: ACC, Big East

Tier 2- mid majors:

2A: MW, WCC
2B: A-10, MVC, American

It's not a good league my man. You can spin the numbers however you'd like. Every national media team covering college hoops often uses the term "stinks". Perception is reality as it comes to that view.

Don't think Shizz is positive or irrational. Just calls it like he sees it. Not a "sky is falling" guy. Always seems to have facts. I see his stuff as best case and worst case scenario analysis. He is, as are all of us, disappointed in some of our traditional strong programs(Marquette, Creighton), happy for Seton Hall, pissed at Pitino and St Johns, see's the skies clearing for Villanova and Xavier, is realistic about Butler, and scratches his head about PC and Georgetown. What is irrational about those takes? Reality is worst case we are a 3 bid league, and best case 5, with a silly Torvik take of 6.

Hoping for 4 because 2 kept improving and strengthening as the season went on(Nova nd Hall), one got its head out of the netherworlds(StJ's), and the good guys end up looking the part of a 1 seed.

This season but it's so difficult to compare an 11 team conference to these mega 16 and 18 team conferences.

With a terrible Marquette and a down Creighton the conference is hurt this season, no way around that.

However, the Big East is very much a major (power) league in basketball even if it is the weakest. That is my point. As a league, the Big East went 22-28 against the P4. That is power league. We also only lost six games against non-P4 teams (@Gonzaga, N vs. Dayton, and home games vs. Dayton, Boise State, Santa Clara, and Buffalo). My issue is not with those that say the league is down (it is- from two and three years ago- not from last year), it is with those that suggest that it is not a power league when all metrics say that it is (KenPom, NET, Torvik, EvanMiya, Massey, etc.).

I'm curious how much UConn has provided in the metrics for the BE these past four years.

We ALWAYS struggle on opening day. Even last year we had to sweat out an OT game in Hartford vs Xavier and Sean Miller.

Let’s just be honest - we have outgrown this conference and do not fit well. Only state school. Also have football. Actually perform. On and on. Time to find a new home. I’ll miss the BET at MSG but that’s about it.

We don’t have a new home because no one wants us. The Big East is the only place that wants us.

I spoke to my niece this week about where her top student friends are applying to college. They're targeting schools like Clemson, Georgia & Tennessee. This is the trend folks. Social Media is driving it. Kids these days are gravitating to big brand state schools in warmer locations, as they see all the culture there as attractive. The football games, the social events, the culture.

The NBE sucks overall in nearly every sport but mens soccer and mens basketball (which has gone downhill over the past few years)
 
Slow holiday week for hoops, but Nova @ Seton Hall tomorrow night should be somewhat entertaining.

I actually respect the posters who actually want to be in the AAC, because at least they are honest about it. Worse are the posters who say "no one wants to be in the American, BUT" and then they go on a rant about how terrible the Big East is and how we should get out. Trashing the current situation without having any solution is trolling and cowardice. Since the only other realistic option is the American, it is fair to assume that anyone writing a dead-end, Big East trashing post is calling for a return to the American. Or they are a gutless troll. Their call.

It will either happen 2030 through 2036 or it won't happen at all. We will see.

I am guessing you are a Syracuse fan, but several schools are possibilities. Whoever you root for, it definitely is NOT UConn.

I try to be as understanding as possible, but I cannot grasp the idea that any criticism of the current state of the BE leads to a knee-jerk reaction, claiming that it indicates the desire to return to the AAC.

For the big picture, I hope Willard turns into something close to what many have believed he could become, as the only legitimate hope for a second high value brand in this conference is Villanova.

The remaining schools all fall into a category where it's good for the conference when they're doing well, but on a national level, nobody would notice when they aren't, which is where most of the conference currently resides.

The best thing for us to do is accept that it is what it is.
