I know some of you guys are experts on this so that is why I'm asking this here.

Question a player declares for the draft his freshman/sophomore/junior year and right after the season ends he leaves the school to begin training. Classes are not over yet but he was in good academic standing when he declared; does that affect APR?

How about if he was a senior and left school early (short of graduation) to prepare for the draft and didn't graduate? Does that affect APR? Marshon Brooks did this btw.

Has PC ever had a guy leave early and get drafted?
 
Depends. You can be in "good academic standing" when you declare, but once you don't finish out that semester, you no longer are guaranteed to be. In order to play the game right as a one and done, you load up on a few summer and intersession credits, plus the fall semester, so that you have 24 total (the minimum after your freshman year) even before you declare. Then you can withdraw from school and you'll be in "good academic standing" in the NCAA's eyes without even finishing out the spring. You can just call all those incomplete.

A senior who leaves school without graduating counts against you. We've had a lot of those. Guys take their best shot at the league and don't care about finishing up just yet (can always do that later - but if you miss a chance t being drafted because you aren't in tip-top shape, you regret it). That's the one advantage big time football has over basketball is that those guys redshirt and are in school nine semesters before they hit the combines. Hoops players are only in school for seven.

1. In the first case, it effects APR if the school didn't rig it so he could leave immediately. If the school gives him enough 1 or 2 week intersession courses prior to spring semester, he can fulfill his requirements prior to the end of the semester, and then he can leave. However, if that's not the case and he leaves after the season ends, then he dings you twice for APR. Once for leaving, once for leaving in bad standing. All depends on how your school rigs it.

2. In the second case, APR has nothing to do with graduation. That's one of its big flaws, the main one that Kentucky exploits. Since it has nothing to do with graduation, the incentive to keep students moving toward a degree is gone. As long as they take classes and complete them, then it doesn't matter whether they are moving to a degree. Graduation has nothing to do with APR. APR is quite simply this: you get 1 point for returning to school in the fall semester, 1 point for returning in the spring. 1 point for finishing in good standing in the fall, 1 point for finishing in good standing in the spring. Essentially, you get double points for the same exact thing. And then you are granted exemptions if you transfer with a 2.3 (or is it 2.6?) GPA, or if you leave for the pros (no GPA requirement), as long as you're in good standing.

It counts against you in GSR but not APR. And even in GSR, it doesn't count against you if they go pro.

One more question for you guys, say a school was to expel two players, they are in good academic standing when they were kicked out, what if any effect would that have on APR? Didn't you guys have this happen before?

They are exempt.

So as to prevent schools from keeping kids in trouble just for APR purposes.

They don't count against you.

As always though, you apply to the NCAA for a waiver.

I'm guessing you're referring to your freshmen, in which case, that doesn't sound good.

All kinds of rumors, 3 prevalent ones; they will be back for the 2nd semester; they are suspended for the entire season; they are expelled. Apparently the Student Conduct board ruled and an appeal was presented, waiting on the results of the appeal, but one of those 3 things I just mentioned will be the result.
 
I guess UConn dodged a bullet with Austin. We definitely don't need that type of publicity right now.

All you need is 24 credits to reach the NCAA minimum of satisfactory academic progress after your freshman year. You can game the system by getting them in school for summer session, they pick up six credits then, take the minimum 12 in the fall, and then get six cushy intersession credits during January and they are at 24 (numbers may vary). Then they can withdraw in the spring, take incompletes, and they have their 24.

They can work the numbers a little differently - maybe more credits in the summer or 14 in the fall. Or finish one easy class in the spring by submitting a joke of a paper from the NBA Draft green room for the last three credits.

It gets harder to do it for two and dones. You really have to complete a few semesters of work.

Has it been reported or speculated on what Austin and Bullock did to get suspended?
 
Rumors flying all around the boards that they will be back after finals end today.

Saw this from Alex Kline over on his website in regards to Brandon Austin:

Hearing the Providence freshman may not ever suit up there. In fact, numerous people in Philadelphia are hearing he may wind up leaving the program and end up at the school he was originally committed to, Penn State.​

Rumor mill again but apparently the freshman won their appeal to have the suspension be only the 1st semester and will be playing this Saturday. What a long fiasco this has been. Nothing ever easy it seems with student athletes at either of our schools.
 
Honestly, do your reporters in Providence just sit on their hands?

At UConn, word would have leaked out as to what they did on the second day.

Hard to weigh in for any fan or alum not knowing what these kids actually did.

Plus it's such a small school, just amazing it has remained quiet.
