How can Tennessee only drop 1 spot after losing to an unranked team? aTm only dropped 2 spots. Oregon State lost to #17 UCLA and dropped 1 spot. OK. Maybe get that. Stanford dropped 2 spots after losing to #10 ASU. HUH? aTm dropped 2 spots after losing to unranked Arkansas. But hey, keep Tenn close to the top 10.

I think USF should be higher than Tenn. and T&AM.

Maybe because Arkansas is 6-10 and Florida is 14-2? All unranked are not made equal...

And Tennessee, despite the loss to Florida, moves only from 12 to 13. [On edit - I was writing this while Eric was posting his observation on this subject.]

Just for the fun of it, here is the order of their AP ranking starting in week 2, with win-loss in ( ).

4 (1-0), 4 (3-0), 8 (5-1), 16 (6-2), 14 (7-2), 14 (8-3), 13 (8-3), 12 (9-3), 13 (10-4)

I think they are getting a bit of love based on their name and past history.

I could be snide and say that the name UConn on the front of the jersey usually strikes fear in the hearts of opposing players, Tennessee not so much anymore. But that would be wrong.

Don't try to apply logic to it, Eric; that way lies madness!

Right. How convenient for you to address that but not Stanford's 2 spot slide after their loss to #10 ASU...

Anyhoo... IMHO all the teams around the 10-18 range who lost should have dropped at least 3-4 spots and teams like Michigan State, Oklahoma, Florida State, and maybe even USF should have jumped ahead of them...

Forget your UTenn fixation...

Duke has dropped all the way to 22 (on its way out)
And L'ville (which walloped the Dookies) re=enters the top-25 at 23
There's no justice.

FWIW, here's how I think the top 25 should go based on last week's games etc...
  1. UCONN
  2. South Carolina
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Texas
  5. Baylor
  6. OSU
  7. Maryland
  8. Mississippi State
  9. Kentucky
  10. Arizona State
  11. Oklahoma
  12. Stanford
  13. Florida State
  14. South Florida
  15. Michigan State
  16. Oregon State
  17. Tennessee
  18. USC
  19. Louisville
  20. UCLA
  21. aTm
  22. Florida
  23. Miami
  24. Duke
  25. Missouri
You can argue that Baylor and OSU should be switched or Maryland and Miss State, but if I were a coach, that's about how I'd vote...

It is really simple. No one starts from scratch and creates a new list. They just slide you around. Losing to Florida wasn't the worst team to lose to, they had beaten FSU first game of the season, and no, I don't think that should count, but wouldn't be surprised if it was in someone's mind.

I think Stanford is too high, FWIW. But is all where you were and where you are perceived to be.

Eric, I think you actually bring up an interesting question. Is the poll meant to reflect more what teams did during the past week, or the body of the teams' work for the entire season?

Thinking back to last year, I think UConn was clearly "punished" for the Stanford loss with future polls reflecting a body of work approach, not to mention inertia.

I would switch USC and UCLA. They split their two games, each winning at home. UCLA beat Oregan State, USC lost to OSU.
UCLA has played South Carolina and Notre Dame(both close loses),
USC has played Gonzaga, Albany, West Virginia, all close wins.

In 2000 Uconn lost to Tenn.and the huskies were ranked no.1 at the time and they stayed no.1 in the next poll.If I remember correctly they stayed no.1 wire to wire.
