Louisville achieved its first #1 ranking in school history, and NC State matched its highest ranking in school history at #2 in the January 18th AP poll. The Cardinals received 20 first place votes. NC State received 5 first place votes, South Carolina received 2 first place votes and UCONN and Stanford each received one.

The Cardinals become the 25th different team to top the AP poll since its inception in 1977.

This week marks the 9th week in program history for NC State in the #2 position, and the first time since December 31, 1990.

Assuming Loiusville and NC State hold on, has the ACC ever had a #1 vs. #2 conference game before?

I would imagine few conferences have ever had such a matchup in WBB (UConn being a big reason why).

Did Tennessee and Georgia ever have a 1v2 game? Other conferences?

I'm sure it's happened before in the ACC. Most likely in 2007... perhaps 2006 as well.

Yes. It has happened 4 times, but not recently:

February 11, 1992: #2 Virginia beat #1 Maryland, 75-74
February 25, 2004: #2 North Carolina beat #1 Duke, 77-65
February 25, 2006: #2 North Carolina beat #1 Duke, 77-65
February 8, 2007: #1 Duke beat #2 North Carolina, 64-53.

There have been 59 games between teams ranked #1 and #2. UCONN and Tennessee account for 6 of those 59 games...UCONN and Stanford have met 4 times when ranked #1 and #2.

In the Southeastern Conference, Tennessee and Auburn met twice when they were ranked #1 and #2 (including the 1989 NCAAT championship game). As hard as it is to believe, those are the only #1 vs. #2 matchups between SEC teams.

I venture to say the BY Top 25, will be different from this.

Happened January 11, 2019 when #1 Notre Dame beat #2 Louisville at home.

And interestingly just the 13th team since 2000. And just the 7th team since 2010. Congrats to the Louisville program. I appreciate how Walz credits past Louisville teams for making it possible. And how Walz balances recognition of the ranking as an accomplishment with realism re: Louisville's position vis-a-vis other programs ("not head and shoulders above").

By comparison: there have been 30 different men's #1's since 2000. And 19 since 2010.

I'm happy that we're ranked #1 for the first time ever. This program has come a long way from the team that made its first Final Four appearance in 2009 without any McDs AAs. (Hard to believe that Angel McCoughtry was not an AA but that's another story.)

But....is this team the best team in the country? Don't know. Can we beat (take your pick) UConn, NC State, South Carolina, Stanford? Don't know. They are all great teams with super coaches. And in this crazy season, it's hard to say where teams are right now, or what they will become as the season (hopefully) reaches its conclusion.

We'll find out soon enough.

Yup...that one is not listed in the AP Poll archive list of #1 vs. #2 matchups. The date of that game was actually January 10th.

Jeff Walz is a classy and very good coach who has built a top program at Louisville. You can bet a lot of teams would love to steal him away.

If it is not a misprint, it is astounding that number 2 North Carolina beat number 1 Duke twice by exactly the same score 77-65 two years apart but on the same date February 25.

Coaches' Poll likes Louisville too.

I'm OK with Louisville at #1 and NC State #2 (we'll figure that one out on the court soon) but UConn at #5???? Should be no lower than #3.
