AP Poll December 23 - UConn down to #7

I'm throwing the ESPN power ranking for Connecticut in here because it doesn't seem to be worth starting another thread.

Have to laugh at some of the teams the Top 10+ are playing. UT Rio Grande Valley by Texas and Univ. of Albany by LSU. I lived in Texas 10 years and never heard of Rio Grand Valley (and my job took me to 235 of the 254 Texas counties). When I see the early season polls, I usually yawn and move on to the next story.

The name of the school is newish. 2 schools merged

7 is what I thought.

Of the teams we have beaten, Louisville and Iowa State have disappeared. Only UNC and Ole Miss are still ranked.

There are 6 unbeatens left. Some of them look legit, but some look like pretenders. Maryland and Ga. Tech will have 5+ conference losses.
Six ranked unbeaten but eight unbeaten. Buffalo and Portland are undefeated.

Interesting to compare the week 8 poll to the preseason poll.

The top 7 in the preseason poll remain the top 7, but in different order. The biggest movers within the top 7 are UCLA (from 5 to 1), UConn (2 to 7), Notre Dame (6 to 3).

From 8 on down, the most prominent changes:
  • Top 20 teams dropping out: Iowa State (preseason #8), Baylor (12), Louisville (17), Florida St (19).
  • Unranked in preseason but top 20 now: TCU (11), Georgia Tech (13), Tennessee (15), Michigan St (19).
  • Other big movers (10+ spots): Maryland (from 18 to 8), NC State (9 to 22).
