AP All-America teams announced!

Maybe I'm too sensitive, but why this headline: "JuJu Watkins, Hannah Hidalgo lead women's AP All-America team"? The article later states that Watkins, Paige and Lauren Betts were unanimous choices, and Hidalgo was named in all but two ballots.
Watkins and Hidalgo were explicitly named because they have now been on the AA first team in both their freshman and sophomore seasons, joining Maya Moore and Courtney Paris. Had Paige not gotten injured, she might have been part of that select few.

Mega congrats to Paige and Sarah. Well deserved! Also glad to see Blakes honored on the 3rd team (as well as Crooks - possibly she should have been 2nd team). Honestly I'd swap Latson or Morrow for Booker, but that's total nit picking. I think they got the top 15 for the most part.

Next year I hope/expect to see Azzi on that list! ;)

Congrats to Paige and to Sarah, a huge accomplishment for both!

We've been truly spoiled with Paige. When you get NPOY as a freshman (wasn't she the first to do that?) the bar of expectations from then on is sky high.

What a blessing Sarah has been. She's so effortlessly great and her future is bright.

that certainly is a good point made in the article, but it's a weak excuse for a poor headline that doesn't reflect that point, and nowhere does the article imply that hannah and juju led the new AA team because of it.

Absolutely a lousy headline. I think @osceola48 had a case to be cranky.

I join you in your sentiments @Plebe, but I suspect Sarah would bristle at the "so effortlessly great" except she might not have it in her to bristle.

"Click Bait" ==== lousy headline. I have (almost) become immune to it.

Lauren Betts certainly made the right decision to transfer to UCLA, and now is their 1st AA.
Kudos to her and maybe KiKi Rice wil also make one of the AA teams someday.

To get your exact reaction and drive clicks.....
Headline could have been:

'Caitlyn Clark may have graduated, but we have a new AP All-American Team!'

ESPN did have Paige, Azzi and Sarah in for a studio interview. It all balances out.

Paige is still a rare 3 time 1st team All-American, and in a year full of stars, Sarah on 2nd team is serious recognition!

Congrats to all the All-Americans.

Ok, I have both efficiency ratings and HerHoopStats WinShares for 90 players and frankly, the AP missed the boat badly on some of these picks.

Madison Booker should not be on the 1st team but on the second team (as the 10th person). Her Efficiency ranking was 26, her WinShares was 11 and her combined ranking was 16th. I get her team was 4th ranking but her stats and even contribution to her teams limited offense do not warrant 1st Team accolades. Minor miss.
Frankly, Katie Dinnebier from Drake should be on the 1st team as her stats are unbelievable. I would have settled for 2nd team considering the competition she's against but to not list her at all shows how ignorant these voters are. Her Efficiency ranking was 4, WinShares was 3 and combined was 2nd. Her omission on any of the teams is ignorant. REALLY BAD MISS.
Aneesah Morrow should be on the 1st team as her stats are better than Betts and Booker. Her Efficiency ranking was 3rd, WinShares was 7th and combined was 6th. She also led the NCAA in rebounds so the optics are there. Minor Miss.
Sedona Prince (for as loathsome of a person) should have been 2nd team. Her Efficiency ranking was 5th, WinShares was 4th and combined was 5th. She outplayed Hailey Van Lith this year but given her "optics" I get the backlash. Still, her play warranted 2nd team. Bad Miss.
Sarah Strong was overshadowed by Paige despite Her Efficiency ranking being 6th, WinShares was 1st and combined was 1st. She made second team which is a minor consolation but her stats scream FIRST TEAM. There's always next year. Minor Miss.
Flau'Jae Johnson did not deserve to be on any of the teams, Her Efficiency ranking was 24th, WinShares was 22nd and combined was 24th.
Bad Miss.
My vitriol however, is the naming of Georgia Amoore to the 2nd Team. Bluntly put, ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I get that Kentucky had a great year but Clara Strack was more vital to that success than Amoore. Her Efficiency ranking was 36th!!!!, WinShares was 53rd and combined was 44th. These rankings actually mean something that when you force a "narrative" which is so egregious over absolute facts, it is insulting to everyone. REALLY, REALLY BAD MISS.

The 3 biggest slights were to Dinnebier, Serah Williams (Efficiency 10th/WS 15th/Combined 10th), Khamil Pierre from Vandy (Efficiency 7th/WS 14th/Combined 9th. Serah and Khamil should be on the 3rd team and no worse than Honorable Mention.

I wonder if we can see the vote totals by the writers to hold them accountable.

Anyway, a hearty CONGRATULATIONS to those selected, especially Paige and Sarah.

Good point about that ESPN interview.

I appreciate your time spent on this DefenseBB, but it's not all about WinShares. I saw her play only in an early-season game vs. Iowa, but how do you compare WinShares for Dinnebier to Paige, Hannah or JuJu?

I would definitely agree Morrow should be 1st team, and not Booker.

Congrats to Paige and Sarah!

Yeah, my eyes start to swim when people go to advance metrics like they are the holy grail.

Can you prove Betts wouldn't have become an AA at Stanford if she stayed?

Also, UCLA has had AA before. I don't know if you meant 1st team specifically. Michaela Onyenwere, Jordin Canada and Maylana Martin have all made AP AA teams, although none 1st team it appears.

Going back in history, Ann Meyers was a 4 time WBCA All American and Denise Curry was 3 time. Maylana Martina and Natalie Williams also made WBCA AA teams.

She would not have made AA if Tara kept her on the bench as much as she did her freshman season.

Right, but her Fr. year Stanford had about 6 front court players who were all deserving of playing time. There was no way to make it work. The situation would've been very different if she was at Stanford as a soph because 3 of those players graduated and left.

Tara, like Dawn currently, told it very straight to the recruits. 10 players will play, priority for upperclassmen, you get to go to Stanford (SC) be part of a great program, learn a lot, compete for the championship. If you disagree with that philosophy, then choose a different school.

It is, or should not be, a surprise to recruits, when they sat at Stanford. Same now at SC: Fulwiley, TJohnson, and Edwards all come off the bench, but they knew that when they signed up.

Kiki Rice for, at least, Honorable Mention seems like a slight as well

Caightlynne*
the BY should do a better job spelling names, but some kind of executive action is needed to rein in the endless proliferation of variants on Caitlin/Caitlyn/Katelyn/Kaitlin/Kaitlyn/Katelin.... It's gotten WAY out of hand

I am watching a first four WBB game on ESPNU. The marquee at the bottom of the screen (under the header WBB) reports “Paige Beuckers leads AP All American Team.” It also specifies that she was a unanimous choice and that she is a three time selection. Thought you might to hear that in this report Paige comes first.
