Anton Bonke 7’2 Center: Transfer Portal

The American stunk last year.

Bonke, Will Berg, and Emmanuel Okorafor were like the 3 best centers in the league last year and they were all deep buried bench guys for (in two cases horrible) power teams last year.
I predict Bonke will play at a big time school.

Who called him that? This place is so lame that it can't appreciate another coach doing good work. You think slapping together a new roster with the best odds to win it all is easy?

If he was on the open market, he was free game. From what I gathered, he actually approached May wanting to come after seeing what he did with Goldin & Wolf last year.

There’s a wide berth between doing good work and being a visionary. May has a great team this year and deserves credit for sure. Having a great season doesn’t make him a visionary.

I'm talking about how he's using multiple big men effectively.

More like, why couldn't Mick see it.
I am not so sure Mick didn't see it. I was watching Colin Cowherd yesterday and his co-host Jason McIntyre told Colin "I will tell you off air and off camera about the Mara situation and what happened with his transfer". This was after they played the clip of Mick Cronin in the post game press conference loss to UConn saying he would like $5M more in NIL, not for himself, but for the players.

I think Michigan just outbid UCLA, plain and simple. One would think UCLA has competitive NIL being in the B1G and being a named brand, but they really don't in relation to the other basketball powers. I don't always trust Colin, but on this one I do as he is out in LA and has good connections and sources close to UCLA and the LA sports scene in general.

Dusty has done a great job over there in Michigan and I can certainly appreciate it. There is still a lot of basketball to go, but I would say they are my favorite after 2 games in the NCAAT. Damn, I just remembered in my bracket I had them losing to Arizona in the finals.

Cronin was telling Mara that his minutes would increase once he got in better shape. It was Mara's prerogative to not believe him, but he did transform his body in the offseason. So Cronin was right.

.-.
Part of Mays genius around Mara was seeing his potential. He was buried at UCLA.

Similar with Wolf in how he used him. Right now May is looking like the new visionary of CBB.

You called him a genius and a visionary in 1 single post. You’re the lame.

Yeah, he’s using bigs creatively and it’s setting a trend. Bigs are in, and they work.

You are exhausting.

You called him these things, people told you “ok that’s good work but cool it with the extremes” and you said everyone’s lame - you are exhausting and performative.

What don't you get?

We're falling behind because Dan has gotten comfortable recruiting a certain "type" and we need guys with more tattoos. BUT, not for big men like Mara and Wolf. They fall under the original "type" we've gotten comfortable recruiting. Just the guards. They are a different "type" and need ink.

With the number of jobs available and coaching changes coming, this is going to be another crazy portal season.

I like the Vaaks kid from Providence, even though it wouldn’t be our biggest need. Hes gonna be a star.

Stop being a stunad if a compliment is raised to a non Uconn program and it's unlikely the performance has to happen. You don't think that's exhausting? Complimenting another program is exhausting? We took a lot of them in 24 on the Hurley offense. I raised awareness as to building great frontcourts being a difference maker across top teams in the NIL era, and then Golden affirms it - a real coach, not a Boneyarder. What are we seeing as the most consistent variable across top teams this year - all great front courts.

Wolf was a rising star at Yale. He handled the ball a lot there. Many here wanted us to recruit him. Mara was a top 50 recruit who got better with experience making that Junior leap. Are you surprised players get better with experience? May is a great coach and gets credit for Wolf and Mara’s success but I don’t see him as this “new visionary”
Look at what Danny has done with centers. Was Adama even a top 50 recruit? Donovan came out of high school as a lower rated recruit than Mara. Tarris is almost averaging a double double. Danny was “a genius” for seeing his potential

Tarris was a top 30 kid coming out of HS.

This isn't about development as much as it is how they are being used in a scheme. May has deployed a multiple big setup now two years running, doing it with intention. He's got them running full court, throwing full court passes, playing an attractive brand for new recruits. I could only assume he'll be going after the best two bigs in the portal again this year after he sends Mara & Johnson (and Lundemborg) to the NBA. Given the $$ and now track record of getting bigs drafted, he'll have his pick of the litter. It's not going to be easy replacing them year over year, but he'll get the best ones.
