Another Geno successor

Why are people constantly wishing geno out the door? We we are the defending champs, wejust had a game last night, we are undefeated in the number one ranked team. Maybe those are better things to talk about?

Honestly, I think the board should treat coaches potential retirement, the same as players potential transferring and not discuss it until it's announced.
I think because Geno is 71 years (turns 72 years old in March) and typically people retire when they get above the age of 70.

Let me stir the mix, some:

Consider Robyn Fralick. MSU head coach. Take a look. She's kinda good.
Met her before the championship game last year, spoke with her and her husband for about an hour, very impressed by her.

Got me @JavaMan

  • Lobo served as an assistant coach for the University of Hartford women's basketball team from 2001 to 2003.
  • She has also been involved in coaching at various youth and community levels.
She's got just enough experience to have made an informed decision to pass.

True, but a lot of people are working for the money and don't like their jobs. Neither of those apply to Geno

Discussing players or coaches leaving has no value and perhaps could be used as a negative for competitors in their recruiting process. In a sense, all are now professionals so suggest treating them the same.

Opposing coaches have been using that approach to recruiting against Geno for over a decade. Geno is now in his 70’s and still going strong. He’s outlasted Tara, MM and several other longtime coaches. As I’ve said before, I hope he coaches forever….

This topic has been discussed several times. It seems that a majority of people always mention Sue and Diana. Either of them would be awesome choices because of name and their basketball background. However, this will never happen. Even though Sue and Megan have a home in Connecticut, they both have it going on in the business world. Diana and Penny have a young family and they live out West. I do not see them uprooting the warmth of Arizona and California to move to Connecticut. I had mentioned Rebecca Lobo the last time in this topic. She would be a perfect choice because of her name and her basketball knowledge. Even though her children are grown she has a job that she likes as one of the top women's basketball analyst at ESPN, which is close to her home.

Shea was offered the job at Vanderbilt and Geno encouraged her, which she accepted. Awesome move for her and for her family. In less than a handful of years, she has turned that program around and now has a Top-5 team. When Geno needed a replacement, the only person that he had in mind was to hire was Tonya Cardoza. For him, this was the correct choice. But I was hoping that he would hire a young alumni player that was getting involved with coaching. There are a few former players that could have filled this void. Names such as Caroline Doty, Kelly Faris, Kail McLaren, Kyla Irwin, Willnett Crockett and even Nykesha Sales. I'm sure that there is other but while writing this post names do not come to mind. Caroline on this year's team would be a perfect fit at UConn if Geno can find a way for her to be a part of his staff. And, I thought that she had mentioned that she would like to get into coaching.

So, where does UConn go from here when Geno says that this is my time to move on. To me Morgan is an awesome assistant coach but she is not a head coach at UConn's level. Many of you have mentioned Shea. At this time, she is at the perfect place. I really don't think that she would leave coaching in the SEC to head back to the Big East even if the job was at Connecticut. I have always said that Carla would be the choice here and I still do. Would she want the job and leave Princeton? She is 50 years old now. If yes, that would give her 10 to 15 years to lead the most elite program in College Women's Basketball history.

Is there a Plan B in place? I'm sure that there is. I will throw three names into the loop. Like some of you have said, my first choice would be Molly Miller. She is was born October 19, 1985 and currently, she is the head coach at Arizona State. A proven winner at the other two schools that she was at. My second choice would be Lindy La Rocque. She was born on December 15, 1989 and is currently the head coach at UNLV. In 2021, 2023 and 2025 Lindy was named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. Third choice would be Jennie Baranczyk the head coach currently at Oklahoma. She was born on February 22, 1982 and was a Three-time National Coach of the Year finalist (2022-2024).

I mentioned age above only to show that they are young coaches. That should not matter when hiring a replacement coach but it doesn't hurt. For now we know that Geno isn't going anywhere unless some form of health issue takes place. He has Sarah Strong for two more years. Oliva comes in next season so that will add another two years. Plus, her father is a big man. Coach will not retire while she is at UConn. LOL. If Geno inks Kaleena Smith then that starts another four years. Whenever a change does take place I hope that I am not long gone. One thing is for sure and whomever the new coach he/she is they will have an Awesome Oppotunity, Awesome Faciltities and an Awesome Brand that are second to no one.
