Angel McCoughtry talks about playing for Geno

And Geno loved having Angel and Brittany play FOR him.
And Big Syl. Boneyarders have declared some players of other teams to be unofficial Huskies - Sylvia Fowles and Angel are among them. For those wondering, Karlie Samuelson (naturally) and Kara Lawson are two others that come to mind.

The system is great, but even Geno would admit that he became a much better coach when the talent of his recruits got better.
What his 'system' (and CD is a huge part of this too) allowed him to do, was create a winning program with the dregs of the worst team in a poor early era BE conference. That allowed him to start recruiting better players and sell what was still a Cinderella FF team in 1991 to better recruits. Winning in 1995 with an undefeated team opened the flood gates to talent and made Uconn (and Rebecca) known across the country.

The system still isn't for every player, and Geno/CD/and the assistants are very good (but not perfect) in identifying which players to recruit and which to pass on.

I also think he learn and adjusted a lot with his experience coaching two cycles of the USA National team - learning to trust his star players more than he had before. And identifying more clearly between player responsibilities and kismet i.e. the bounce of the ball. His famous meltdown at halftime in the 2001 FF isn't happening again.

I also think the Stanford story above is a little rewrite - no question they spent the year working on a plan to play against Uconn, and they may have adopted some of Uconn's offense, but it was still overall a Tara system adjusted to defeat a Uconn defense, and a Tara defense adjusted to slow a Uconn offense. Unfortunately, they didn't spend enough time planning for TN and got blown out in the championship game in 2008.

Looks like TWO equals analyzing & thinking as ONE.

The reason Stanford won was Mel Thomas and Kalana Greene had been lost to season ending injuries.
While that may have been a factor, Thomas was lost after 8 games and Greene after 16 and the team had a lot of time to adjust to them being out. They went 36-2 avenging their other loss (Rutgers) in the elite 8. They were a 1 seed in the tournament while Stanford was a 2 seed so they were favored in the game. (And I believe this was the year CViv went crazy about the tournament seeding as they were the 2 seed in Uconn's region and had already played Uconn twice, with only three BE teams in the top 4 seeds (Louisville was a 4 seed.))

She was an angry Geno hater and then along came the Olympics. Do you remember that picture of her riding Geno's back with the biggest smile..."now I love him."
